Will Not Power On and the Light on the Power Button Will Not Blink or Illuminate
No light is turning on in the power button and the screen is black when powering on the Chromebook.
Chromebook Is Not Charged
Connect the AC adapter and power cord to the power jack and plug it into an outlet. Wait 5-10 minutes for the Chromebook to charge at a minimal amount (up to 10%). Power on the Chromebook.
Faulty Power Jack
Connect the AC adapter and power cord to the power jack and plug it into an outlet. Wait 5-10 minutes for the Chromebook to charge at a minimal amount (up to 10%). Power on the Chromebook, if it is still not turning on, continue to charge for another 5-10 minutes. If it continues to not power on, the power jack is faulty. Consider replacing the power jack.
Screen is Black Although The Chromebook is On
The fan is turned on and the power button is blinking or illuminating. However, the screen is black.
Brightness Setting is Not at a Higher Level
The brightness of the screen may be set at the lowest level. While the Chromebook is powered on, tap the high-brightness key (a sun-looking symbol with the long sun rays) on the keyboard.
Faulty Display Screen
Unplug any device connected to the Chromebook. Perform a hard reset by pressing down on the power-on button for 15 seconds to deplete the Chromebook of electrical charge. Wait 2-3 minutes before powering it back on. If the screen is still black, continue to the next step.
Connect a HDMI cable to the Chromebook and an external monitor. If both screens are black, then the display screen is faulty and you may need to consider replacing the screen.
Plugged in but is Not Charging
Chromebook is not charging when connected to the plugged-in AC adapter and power cord.
Faulty AC Adapter
Connect the AC adapter and the power cord to the power jack and plug it into an outlet. Ensure that the AC adapter and the power cord are plugged in all the way and the power jack is connected to the computer. If the adapter is plugged in and the jack is connected but the light on the AC adapter does not turn on, the AC adapter is faulty. Consider purchasing a new adapter.
If it continues to not power on, the power jack is faulty and you may need to consider replacing it.
Faulty Battery
Connect the AC adapter and the power cord to the power jack and plug it into an outlet. Ensure that the AC adapter and the power cord are plugged in all the way and the power jack is connected to the computer. If the Chromebook only powers on when the adapter is plugged in, then the battery is faulty. Replace it using this guide here.
Overheating After a Few Minutes of Powering On
While using the Chromebook, it starts to feel hotter than normal. The fan is creating a loud sound and the power shuts off without notification.
Dust or Other Substances are in the Fan and/or Vents
Computers often overheat and power off because of dust particles in the vent and fan. Use an air duster to blow dust particles out of the vent and fan.
Not Enough Thermal Paste
Lack of enough thermal paste between the heat sink and the processor of the Chromebook may cause it to overheat. Completely clean off all of the old thermal paste. Then apply a drop of new thermal paste in the middle of the processor. Gently push down on the heat sink and lock it by tightening the screws.
Faulty Fan
While the Chromebook is on, turn it upside-down and remove the bottom cover. If you see the fan spinning in an irregular pattern, put a drop of mineral oil in the axle (the central part of the fan). If you do not hear the fan turning or feel air coming out of the vents, you may need to consider replacing the fan.
Unresponsive Keyboard
While pressing down on the keys and the keyboard, the Chromebook is unresponsive.
Substances are Underneath the Keys
Substances (e.g. food, dust, dirt, etc.) can be located underneath the keys, making it hard to press down. Use an air duster to blow those substances out of the keyboard.
Faulty Keyboard
If the entire keyboard does not respond, consider replacing it with this guide.
