Pentax PZ-10 Troubleshooting

You've tried everything, but you can't turn it on.

Before starting to dismantle your camera, check to see if the battery is inserted into the battery port on the bottom of the camera.

The battery may be uncharged. Try fully charging the battery, and insert again into the battery port.

If the battery is inserted, but the camera still doesn't turn on, the battery may be dead, corroded, or defective. Consider buying a replacement battery.

Developed images are very blurry or distorted.

The lens may be dirty; try cleaning it with a lint-free cloth and rubbing alcohol.

The pictures may not have been taken with a steady hand. Try holding the camera more still or place on a tripod for more stability.

The film in your camera may be defective. Try buying a different brand of film, or a new roll.

The shutter may be broken inside. You may need to perform a full replacement. These steps are explained in our Pentax PZ-10 Button Replacement guide.

Viewfinder is dark, blurry, or you can't see through it at all.

The lens cap may still be on. Try removing it.

The lens may not be properly installed. Make sure that the lens is tightly secured or oriented correctly.

There may be something stuck in front of the viewfinder lens. Try clearing it out with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol.

The internal mirrors or shutter may be damaged. Consider replacing it here:

Shutter doesn't engage or make an audible sound when button is pressed, or you can hear grinding, or questionable noises.

The button on the camera may have dirty contacts. Try blowing compressed air through the crevices around the button, or swab the area with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol.

The shutter mechanism may be jammed by a small object. Open the back of the camera to see if there aren't any visible obstructions, and carefully dislodge them using tweezers or compressed air.

The shutter may be completely damaged. Consider a complete replacement of the shutter.

Buttons don't fully depress, grind or stick when pressed, or simply doesn't activate the camera.

Check the crevices around the button, and see if there is anything lodged or residue in them. Try using a small thin object, such as a needle or spudger, to clear out these cracks, or blow compressed air through the surfaces.

The buttons may have some residue over the contacts. Try swabbing the area with some rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs to clean the contacts.

Flash does not engage when the flash feature is enabled, or the flash is weak.

The switch/button may be stuck or something is lodged in the spaces. Try the previous solutions for nonresponsive buttons listed above.

The film may not load into the camera, or won't wind properly.

The film may be faulty; check for any folds, kinks, or imperfections in the film. If any, discard the film, and try another roll.

The film door may be jammed; a full seal is necessary for the film to load. Try checking the hinges for any obstructions, and apply the jammed button solutions listed above, or apply a lubricant to the axle on the hinge.

The gears may be jammed. Check the gear assembly for any visible obstructions. If none are visible, consult our How to clean the Pentax PZ-10 gears guide.
