The device is turning on but there is no response from the screen.

Begin with device powered off. Proceed by disconnecting any external devices such as USB electronics or storage devices (ex: external HDD, SD card.) Unplug the AC adapter and press and hold the power button for a minimum to drain any remaining power stored by the capacitors. After the power has been drained, plug in the AC adapter and reboot the computer to see if issue is fixed.

Identify the DVI port on the device. Once located, use a DVI cable to connect the laptop to a powered external monitor with the proper DVI fitting. If the picture appears on the external monitor and the laptop screen remains black/blank, this could indicate that the graphics drivers need to be updated. From here, you will need to use the external monitor to navigate to the HP support page and install the newest graphics drivers for the model of laptop. If the latest drivers have been installed and the problem still persists, this more than likely means damage to the LCD of the laptop screen.

Most of the keys respond but a few don’t.

Click on the start icon in the lower left corner of the desktop. From here either use the search bar or manually locate and select the control panel icon. Once the control panel is open locate the device manager tab and open it. Then scroll down to the keyboards tab under devices and right-click the device that appears. Select uninstall, then once the device is uninstalled restart the computer. (An external keyboard will be required to enter a password if applicable.) Once signed in, the driver will update to the newest version and reinstall automatically.

While holding can of compressed air, hold laptop upside down and release air 3” away from keyboard, ensuring that air is getting under all affected keys. Let device sit upside down for five minutes to ensure that all loose debris is out and attempt keystrokes again. If debris persists, see this guide.

The device will not boot up when power button is pressed.

Check to see that all connections between the wall outlet, the AC adapter power supply, and the laptop are snug. Once complete check the power supply LED. If device doesn’t turn on, and the battery is taking no charge, the power supply is unjust. Try replacing it with an AC adapter that is compatible.

If the AC adapter has been confirmed as properly functioning, plug the device in and allow it to charge for at an hour. Afterwards, leave the device plugged in and power it on. Let the device sit for 10-15 minutes and then unplug it. If the device powers down immediately or within a quick time frame, the battery will need replacing.

You’ve tried multiple headphones and still can’t get sound out of the headphone jack.

Select the start button and in the search bar type “Device Manager”. From here, expand the sound, video and game controllers tab. One at a time, right-click all devices with an audio logo in the subset, and select “Update Driver”. After all drivers have been updated reboot the device and check to see if the problem still persists.

Ensure headphones are connected and right click the volume control icon in the bottom toolbar. Click playback devices and then click the headphone icon and select Set Default.
