Dell Inspiron 1100 Troubleshooting
Boot Device Not Found
Shortly after powering on your device, you receive an error message informing you that the boot device was not found.
MBR is Corrupted
The MBR (Master Boot Record) is responsible for determining where the operating system is located, as well as how to load it into the device's main storage. The MBR may become corrupted, in which case you will need to restore it so that it knows how to properly load the operating system.
There is No Hard Drive
You may receive an error message informing you that no hard drive was detected. Access the System Setup screen during boot time (by pressing F2) to see whether your device recognizes the presence of the hard drive. If not, you may want to consider replacing the hard drive.
Boot Device Order is Wrong in BIOS
Your device may be loading important components in the wrong order, which would cause an error. By pressing F12 during boot time, you will be able to change the order of the listed boot devices so that they are correct.
Computer Won’t Power On
When the power button is pressed, the device does not turn on, no lights appear, no noises are made, and the screen remains blank.
Battery is Drained
It may seem like an obvious solution, but the battery can drain to 0% power without you even knowing - for example, there could be a loose connection. Make sure your charger is securely plugged into the appropriate port on your device, and also make sure the charger is securely plugged into the main power source.
Power Supply is Bad
It is possible that the device's adapter is faulty or malfunctioning. Try plugging in your device to a different power source. If your device powers on, then your original power source is the problem. However, if your device still does not power on when connected to a different power source, your adapter may be at fault. Considering purchasing a replacement.
Motherboard is Dead
The motherboard is the most important component of electronic devices. While it is possible for the motherboard to fail, you should be certain that the motherboard is the issue before tampering with it. In the event that the motherboard is causing the issue, you may wish to replace it.
Keys are Stuck/Sticky
One or more keys sometimes get stuck when pressed.
A Liquid was Spilled on The Keyboard
Sometimes when operating the Dell Inspiron 1100 a drink might be spilled onto the keyboard. When this happens, the laptop should be powered off, the battery removed, and the power supply unplugged from the outlet, and left to sit overnight in a warm room. Often times sugary drinks will leave behind residue that causes keys to stick. To remove this film, power off the laptop, remove the battery, and unplug the power supply from the wall, then dissolve the sticky film using Isopropyl Alcohol. DO NOT USE WATER OR HOUSEHOLD CLEANING PRODUCTS.
Foreign Objects are Interfering with Keys
Sometimes small objects will fall into the keyboard and interfere with key presses. To solve this issue remove the keys from the keyboard a few at a time and turn the laptop upside down to shake out the objects. Be careful to put the keys back into their correct slot.
Keyboard Switch(es) are Worn Out
Over time, some mechanical components of a keyboard can wear out and cause the keys to stick or otherwise become non-responsive. The only solution to this problem is to replace the keyboard.
Computer is Loud/Noisy
Your device is on and appears to be functioning properly, but is making more noise than usual. The noise is audible and potentially even distracting.
Heat Sink is Clogged with Dust
When a Dell Inspiron 1100 has been running for a few years or is run in an environment where dust accumulates, the heat sink will often become clogged with dust, hair, and other dirt. This clogging heavily interferes with cooling the laptop. To clear the clogging, use compressed air to blow the dust off of the fans in the heat sink. Be sure to prevent the fan from spinning due to the compressed air as this will damage the motor.
Computer is Overheating
When the Dell Inspiron 1100 becomes overheated, the fan will speed up to help cool the laptop. This can become very loud and noisy. To lower the fan speed the laptop must be cooled down. To do this, turn off CPU and GPU heavy processes and move the laptop out of direct sunlight and away from sources of heat. Some of the most common heat sources include your lap, pets, clothes, and other electronic devices. DO NOT PLACE THE LAPTOP IN A FRIDGE OR FREEZER, as this may damage components (not to mention contaminate food).
Computer Shuts Down Unexpectedly
When using your device, it appears to be working as expected, but suddenly shuts off (black screen) without warning.
Battery is Dead
When the battery of the Dell Inspiron 1100 is drained from extended use without being plugged in, the laptop may shut down or enter hibernation mode without warning . To fix this issue, just plug the laptop's charging cable into a live power outlet and connect the power supply to the laptop's charging port. This issue can also be solved by swapping the drained battery for a charged battery.
Sometimes during normal operation a laptop's OS may encounter a catastrophic error. This almost always results in the laptop shutting down and is usually indicated by an error screen prior to shutting down. To remedy this, try booting the OS normally. If you can not boot the OS check with the OS' Help or Support Forums to get help from an expert.
