Hello! My name is Kyle Smith and I’m a technical writer at iFixit.
Working at iFixit combines my two favorite activities: being technical and writing. My childhood dream was to be a writer. In high school I decided to pursue engineering. Now I’ve somehow managed to combine those interests into a single job.
When I’m not writing, I like to cook, play video games, and watch other people play video games (I never left the “let’s play” YouTube phase). I love learning about kitchen-related materials (e.g. carbon steel, cast iron, ceramics) and hope to one day forge my own chef’s knife.
I grew up in Southern California. I did all of the classic things like going to the beach, being confused about when I needed a sweater, and exploring the national parks (Death Valley remains my favorite). And I of course think that the California poppy is the most elegant flower.

I left SoCal to attend college on the Central Coast. My time at Cal Poly was filled with incredible classes, events, and people. They threw me into a machining workshop my first week and I’ve enjoyed cutting metal ever since. I traveled to Arizona to compete in a model airplane competition and found meaning in crashing brilliantly. I graduated in 2020 with a degree in industrial engineering.
