Not a NEWBE but felt like one
My 5th Gen Video iPod battery needed to be replaced. The iPod had been sitting around for quite some time unused and the battery just wouldn't take a charge.
I have the skill set to do these types of repairs and was expecting this to be a piece of cake, NOT! I did manage the repair BUT was far more difficult that expected. In my opinion, if you don't have the skill set and are new to these type of repairs, you will not end up with a functioning iPod. You will have broken something in the process that will prevent you from achieving success so pay the extra money and send your iPod in to have the battery replaced.
Seriously? The case if very difficult to separate. I even cut myself with the spudger doing it. The battery connection is not difficult to remove BUT I can see that many people will break the retainer in removing it. Once that retainer is broken you are hosed. And getting that battery ribbon cable in place and replacing that retainer is an exercise in HARRY HOUDINI. Here is one thing that iFixit lacks. The repair guides are fantastic for getting you to the point of replacing what you intended. BUT THEY OFFER NO ADVICE, DIRECTION OR INSTRUCTION FOR THE RE-ASSEMBLY other than reverse the procedure for re-assembly.
