5-year-old imac disk replacement

OE Seagate drive recognized, but disk utility hangs when attempting to check - time to replace.

Big suction cups for glass were as much fun as the repair! Tip: blow out dust using balloon inflator pumps. Guide was very helpful, thanks, but still trying to determine the difference between spudger and long fingernails. Diskutil "erase disk" to format, Installed 10.6.4, did all updates, but the fans are running fast all the time, even when cold start. Tried resetting SBC per apple support memos to no avail. Advice?

Not hard at all but do outside on a calm sunny day so you can see what you are doing.
