Tools

What Does the iFixit Staff Have in Their Everyday Carry?

At iFixit, we love tools. Like, a lot. We know how important it is to have the right tools for each project—that’s why we spent thousands of hours developing the best toolkits for getting inside electronic devices. Some tools are so important that you always need to have them on you, just in case.

iFixit team members have a wide range of hobbies. Whether we’re on our way to the office, exploring the local coast to check out the surfing conditions, or finding ourselves at an impromptu birthday party, we stay prepared. We talked to ten of our team members to get a look inside their everyday carry and what items they consider essential:

Jarred, Software Engineer

Items in your EDC: Macbook Pro, iPhone, Leatherman, knife, lockpicking set, Muji pen, Grandfather’s Mont Blanc pen, lens wipes, handkerchief, coffee vessel

Activities you use these for: Work, random life situations

Favorite toolkit: Pro Tech Toolkit

Megan, Parts Testing

Items in your EDC: Keys, pocket knife, iFixit badge, phone, debit card

Activities you use these for: Getting to and from work, streaming music, buying things, breaking down boxes, camping

Favorite Toolkit: Mako Driver Kit

Carsten, Tech Writer

Items in your EDC: Phone, wallet + wallet tool, keys, thumb drive, Apple Watch

Activities you use these for: Anything and everything!

Favorite Toolkit: Manta Driver Kit (Minnow is a close second!)

Hayden, Supply Chain Specialist

Items in your EDC: Grandma’s binoculars, Koozis, sunglasses, sunblock, playing cards, magnifying glass, favorite rock, gloves, wallet, mask, and water bottle

Activities you use these for: Hiking, driving my beach cruiser at night on the coast, surfing, starting fires without a lighter while camping, exploring the coastline

Favorite Toolkit: Pro Tech

Scott, Shipping supervisor

Items in your EDC: Phone, headphones, external HDD, power bank

Activities you use these for: Music is my life. The headphones are for on the go listening, the power bank is for emergency headphone charging, and I keep all my terrible 90’s/00’s music backed up on the external HHD

Favorite Toolkit: Pro Tech Toolkit

Arthur, Tech Writer

Items in your EDC: iPhone, flashlight/headlight, Leatherman, Fisher Telescoping Space pen (with turquoise ink!), jet lighter, USB drive, titrium keychain, wallet

Activities you use these for: Photography, car repair, cutting zip-ties, finding my keys in the dark. The jet lighter is for impromptu birthday parties.

Favorite Toolkit: Pro Tech Toolkit

Taylor, Teardown Engineer

Items in your EDC: inhaler, pocket knife, earbuds (wired + wireless), USB drive, phone, lips balm, wallet, puppy poop bag

Activities you use these for: Training my new puppy, staying alive during an asthma attack. Wireless *and* wired earbuds because you can never rely on wireless buds! And a USB stick is the digital equivalent to a pocket knife—you never know when you’ll need it but you’re always glad to have it when the need arises.

Favorite Toolkit: Minnow Driver Kit. I love that little thing.

Craig, Head of Technical Writing

Items in your EDC: MacBook Air, iPhone, Apple Watch, Leatherman, water bottle, sunglasses, lip balm, face mask, keys, wallet, work badge, messenger bag

Activities you use these for: Mostly just to and from work (but I leave the MacBook Air at home when I run errands).

Favorite Toolkit: Pro Tech Toolkit

Shahram, Parts Tester

Items in your EDC: Leatherman, compass, flashlight, wireless dongle

Activities you use these for: Fixing and fishing, finding my way, pen testing.

Favorite Toolkit: Pro Tech Toolkit

Kyle, Tech Writer

Items in your EDC: Phone, wallet, keys, lip balm, pocket knife, notebook, and pen

Activities you use these for: Read the news, listen to music, small repairs (the pocketknife has tiny scissors and a screwdriver), opening packages, taking notes and drawing.
