The Thymio Repair Guide

ENGLISH

Physical repair procedures for Thymio - basic repairs

Diagnosis and test

This list allows to test the robot and to decide which steps to take in order to repair it. Detailed procedures for the most common repairs are available below.

Charge the robot if it is discharged (wall charger, min 3 hours). Does it not recharge?

  • Check/ change the battery
  • Check/ change the USB connector (bad contact or broken soldering)
  • Check/ change the USB cable

Turn on the robot. Does it not turn on, even with a full battery?

Plug the robot to a USB port on a computer and upgrade the firmware from Thymio Suite. Does it not connect to the software?

  • Check/ repair the USB connector (bad contact or broken soldering)
  • Check/ change the USB

Unplug the robot, turn it off and back on. Browse the built-in behaviours, try all buttons. The buttons are not responsive?

  • Wait 10 seconds before touching a button (to reinitialise the software filters)

  • If especially the left or center buttons react badly, check the waveguide (mostly on series I)
  • Check the touch PCB cable.

The built-in behaviours are not available?

  • Check that the dongle and cable are not plugged to a computer, restart the robot. Upgrade the firmware.

The colors are not right?

  • Use VPL to check that the color LEDs are working properly, change them if necessary.

In the red behaviour, pass a finger in front of each IR sensor (5 in front, 2 underneath, 2 in the back) to check that they work and the red LED turns on.

An LED does not turn on?

  • Use Aseba Studio to check that the sensor returns a correct value, in order to determine whether the sensor or the LED needs to be changed. Change the component if necessary.

In the red behaviour, tap on the robot, throw it in the air. It should make noise. Does it not make noise?

  • It makes no noise at all
  • Put the volume back up

  • Check the speaker (damaged cable?), replace it if necessary (it is generally easier to replace the whole cover)
  • It makes noise when the buttons are touched but it does not detect shocks: check the accelerometer. If it is defective, it is generally necessary to change the whole PCB or the robot.

In the red behaviour, turn the robot to check the led circle, each LED must work.

One LED does not light up?

  • Change it.

In the dark blue behaviour, clap 3 times and check that the robot counts the 3 claps. It does not detect claps?

  • Check the microphone soldering.
  • Also check the blue LED next to the microphone, change it if it does not work.

In the purple behaviour: touch the front button once, twice, stop it. Touch the back button once, twice, and stop it. The robot should drive straight forward and backwards at different speeds. Does it not drive straight?
