Background Information

Block Image

The Linux Router Project, abbreviated as LRP, was an open-source, networking-centric mini-distribution of Linux used for routers, terminal servers, and other embedded networking systems. The OS started development in 1997 as a 'router on a floppy', and was small enough to fit on a single 1.44 MB floppy disk that was primarily developed by Dave Cinege, Charles Wright, and Paul Wouters.

LRP is the oldest embedded Linux distributions, and is considered to be one of the founding distributions of many other embedded systems ad commercial products. Many core components of LRP can still be found in many embedded systems including POSIXness and BusyBox.

Lost Media

Developer Dave Cinege started working on LRP version 4.0 in late 2000 as a compleate revamp of the origonal LRP code, however during development it was determined that the new direction required a compleate rewrite of the OS.

This rewrite began development under the name LRP 5.0 in early 2002 as a complete reqrite and reimplementation of the Linux userland with a new standard design outside of the Portable Operating System Interface specifications (POSIX), but a few months later development of LRP 5.0 stopped.

Cinege cited that due to financial reasons he was unable to continue the development of LRP, and later refused to release any further works due to animsty towards the computer industry.

The official LRP website was last updated on May 6, 2003, and no further update to the core LRP have been made.
