Background
The Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 1 was the first generation of the E14 14-inch business laptop series, introduced around late 2019 to early 2020 as an affordable ThinkPad designed for small businesses and professional users. It combines the traditional ThinkPad keyboard and TrackPoint with a mainstream performance platform based on 10th-generation Intel® Core™ processors.
As a “Gen 1” model, it uses the original hardware and chassis design that later generations expanded upon. It’s not as thin or feature-rich as newer models, but it remains a solid value option for everyday productivity tasks and general office use.
Identification
To confirm that you specifically have a ThinkPad E14 Gen 1 (first generation):
Check the Model/Type Number
- We will be working on a 20RA Gen 1 model
- Look on the bottom case for a sticker showing the machine type/model, such as 20RA (early Gen 1 IDs).
- You can enter that number on Lenovo’s support site to confirm the exact generation.
System Information in Windows
- Press Windows + R, type
msinfo32→ Enter. - Look at “System Model” — this will usually say something like ThinkPad E14 Gen 1 or a machine type that corresponds to Gen 1.
Processor Family
- Gen 1 is defined by 10th-gen Intel® Core CPUs (e.g., i5-10210U, i7-10510U) if your CPU is 10th gen, that strongly indicates a Gen 1 model.
Technical Specifications
CPU / Platform
- Up to 10th-generation Intel® Core™ processors:
• Core i3-10110U (2 cores, 4 threads)
• Core i5-10210U (4 cores, 8 threads)
• Core i7-10510U or optionally i7-10710U (higher core count)
Memory (RAM)
- Uses DDR4-2666 SO-DIMM RAM.
- Official Lenovo spec lists up to 16 GB max; however, community reports indicate many Gen 1 units can accept a single 32 GB SO-DIMM even though single-channel only.
Storage
- Supports 1× M.2 SSD (PCIe or SATA), and many units also include a 2.5″ SATA HDD bay for larger storage.
Display
- 14″ Full HD (1920×1080) display — either TN or IPS panel.
TN panels have lower viewing angles and ~220 nits brightness.
IPS panels are ~250 nits with better viewing angles.
Graphics
- Integrated Intel UHD Graphics built into the CPU.
