Logic board failed due to disconnecting of battery connector

After installing my new hard drive due to the failure of the old one, my MBP could not boot up. I took it to the Apple Genius Bar and the guy said that my logic board has failed.

This was due to removing of the battery connector prior to changing the hard drive, he said. He said that the battery connector is NOT meant to be removed when you install hard drive or RAM.

I followed the guide on this site and did all the steps carefully, now I'm going to have to pay for a new logic board.

Can anyone explain this for me, I am really frustrated right now?

Hi guys I got my logic board replaced :)

I do believe the old one failed due to ESD. I never carefully discharged the static electricity from my body.

However, on all the guides here there was no mention of that so I guess this is a painful experience for me :)

Did the Apple guy have big pimples on his face? He sure doesn't know what he's talking about. Removing power to the logic board had nothing to do with its failure. Try a SMC reset and let us know your results. You will need to try to start up from your original system installation DVD.

I tried every possible method before taking it to Apple store.

I removed te battery connector with a nylon spudger.

Right now I am just frustrated how my logic board just failed because the installation was done very carefully.

I've often removed the battery on units I was fixing for different reasons and never had a problem. So I'm not sure I understand what the Genius was telling you. It's always a good idea in pulling the power source before working on a system AC or DC as you never know when you might hit a live line or the on/off switch while changing things out which if you are not careful could damage your system.

Did you use a metal tool to pry up the connector? Thats the only thing I could think of if you shorted across the contacts some how.

Sounds like you used the correct tool, did you use any ESD protection? Which is the only other thing that could have killed the logic bd. that you might have missed.

Have you put back in the old HD to see if there is a difference? Did you try putting the new HD in an external case and see if it worked (before you installed it inside or now on a different system)?
