Replace SuperDrive with 2nd HardDrive (IDE/PATA)

Hi all, my first question and thanks for all the post I've read so far, great knowledge base!

My LapTop - Powerbook G4 17" 1.67 - A1139

My original HD failed, purchased 2 identical Samsung-HM160HC-PATA/IDE- Spinpoint M5, replaced original with new and checked system, all fine, OS X installed via FireWire connected External HD, and sucsess working like a charme.

Aim with the 2nd HD is a RAID configuration for no other reason then trying it out!

Installed 2nd HD into - 12.7 mm Optical Bay ATA Hard Drive Enclosure (for PATA Drives) - replacing the Superdrive using the existing cable loom that was attached to to SuperDrive to connect up new HD to LocicBoard.

Reconnected External HD again to boot on but no show of any of my 3 connected HD's, Target Disk don't work either in this set up!

I have redone this procedure 3 times now without sucess but can get everything working with single HD and SuperDrive attached, original Powerbook configuration.

My question is, do I need to use a jumper to set the 2nd HD to Slave (both HD's came without jumpers) or is there something else I am not seeing to make this work?

Cheers in advance, is driving me nuts not being able to do what others seem to be able to do.

Regards

Urs

Which is your answer osvaldo?? Don't see your name anywhere.

My question was whether I needed to set a jumper on the 2nd HDD to slave and no one really answered that question other than No, no need to do!

I did not do extra testing as suggested below but simply used a jumper and tried again, seemed the most logical approach in the end and it worked straight away.

To check to see if the second hard drive is caused an IDE master slave conflict, disconnect the the primary hard drive and see if you can now boot from your external firewire drive. If so, go to any computer repair place and ask them for some IDE jumpers for 2.5" drive and configure your drives as master - slave.

Hi,

You don't need to use jumper. Paid attention to the maximum capacity:

320 GB internal max capacity, 750 GB DualDrive capacity, total 1,07 TB.

Boot on installation CD, DVD, external HDD, and use the Disk Utility to format your second HD.

Thanks Mistrato. My 2 new HD's are 160GB each, so 320GB total.

I do boot as you say in your post, but all I get is a grey screen with the "Refresh" logo on the left and the "GO Arrow" logo on the right, no HD's show up above to start from!

I can not get to Disk Utility.

When I tried to "Target Disk" all I get is a grey screen and then my PB shuts down, no FireWire logo shows.

Still trying ...

Cheers

To boot on OS X FireWire installation, or choose which boot options, you must hold down the Option key while powering on the laptop.

Thanks Mayer, I am doing just that and I can get to the Boot Option Screen, but as said no options do show, nothing to choose from!

Reset PRAM, try again.

If it doesn't work maybe you should tried to find an OS X cd/dvd install?

So no one done the 2nd HDD into the Powerbook G4 17" 1.67 on here?

I have used the ifixit OptiBay caddy for HDD, surely someone else would have tried this same conversion!

Cheers for all answers sofar, but no help really, question still open

"Do I need to set a jumper (to slave) for 2nd HDD or not?
