The iPod Seventh Generation, marketed and sold as the "iPod Classic", was released in September 2009, and did not have any visible differences compared to the previous version. It simply replaced the previous 120GB iPod Classic 6.5 with a thin 160GB version.

iPod won't sync with itunes

I brought a new 7th gen classic as a Christmas present. I am unable to get it to sync with iTunes.

I have tried on an old pc with a previous/old version of iTunes. I get the message "iPod software update server could not be contacted. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active." ... and "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPod" It keeps asking to restore the iPod which then gives these messages.

We have just changed broadband provider. I have 2 other classics that work and sync without issue. Any help gratefully received.

Are you able to access the iTunes Store from your PC? It's possible the settings within your PC are messed up so iTunes is not working. Do you have access to a Mac system to see if that works.

Syncing between your PC and the iPod is local and does't access the internet which can explains why your other iPods are working.

I am able to access iTunes from a laptop and an old desktop pc. I think the internet is needed when it asks for software update for the new iPod.

@teresahaye32542 - Yes, the access to the Internet by you PC is required to download the updates via iTunes from within iTunes! Basically the Pc is acting as a proxy to your iPod.

You can also manually transfer the file into your iTunes folder here's a link to the firmware Rev C ("Thin" 160 GB, September 2012) review the documentation.
