Early 2011 Model: A1278 / 2.3 GHz i5 or 2.7 GHz i7 processor

Green Light Only - Battery not charging

Early 2011 MBP A1278 (820-2936) Getting only a green light on the charger.

OCLP 10.13.6 > 12.7.8 Monterey (OS running VERY smoothly)

I am 99% sure the DC In board is functioning OK (Tried another), no dirt, clean pins. SMC & PRAM Resets to no avail. Logic board is spotless, never water damaged, Charger is OK. I cannot see any blown components under the michaelscope. The battery is detected in Apples system profiler but it reports the battery is not charging. Coconut reports everything is fine & the battery IS charging! The battery charges OK in another same unit so 100% no battery issue. Any ideas on what I can try in case I missed something?

R7051?

Solução escolhida

Turned out to be a just a poor connection / solder on the R7051

The comparator logic likely messed up. There is two resistors the ISL chip measures to see the voltage applied and drawn. Luis Rossmann has a good vid on this you should check out. I'll need to dig for it when I get home.

@danj Bright Green light to suggest fully charged but it isn't charging. I am taking it to the menders today to check this R7051? as it looks suspect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGYrykiL... (7 minutes so...)

If your Early 2011 MBP (A1278, 820-2936) shows only a green light and won’t charge, despite a good battery and DC-in board, check the charging circuit—especially the ISL6259 (charging IC) and related current-sense resistors (R7050, R7051). Verify PPBUS_G3H voltage (should be ~12.6V). If low, the ISL6259 or Q7055/Q7056 MOSFETs may be faulty. Inspect for corrosion or poor solder joints around the charger IC. Also, reseat the battery connector and inspect SMC signals (SMBUS_SMC_BSA_SCL/SDA). If all else checks out, replacing the ISL6259 or associated MOSFETs often resolves this issue.

It was the R7051, we cleaned up that area before surgery and discovered it was wobbling (cracked solder joint) and a quick blast of the hot air fixed it very easy :)
