Thinkpad P71 can't charge sometimes while it's on

I used my P71 for about 8 years and it started to have a charging issue several months ago. The charging indicator is fine, and the battery icon in taskbar shows it already connected to the AC adapter, but it just doesn’t charge sometimes while the laptop is on. It can certainly charge while it’s off.

The charging issue doesn’t happen very frequently, but it still bothers me a lot. I went to my local Lenovo Service Center and they just reinstalled the Windows system again and again... Each installation can make the issue disappear for maybe some days, and then can’t charge again.

My P71 works really fine except this issue, so I really hope to fix that. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Hi @heite,

It could be a faulty battery.

Create a battery report and use it to check the condition of the battery.

When you have the report, compare the Design Capacity value versus the Full Charge Capacity value, as shown in the report.

For a new battery the values would be the same but given that your laptop is 8 years old and presumably the battery hasn't been replaced, this wont be the case.

Use the formula Full Charge Capacity value x 100 ÷ Design Capacity value, to find the charge percentage (%) value of the battery.

If the charge % is <35% you may consider that replacing the battery is necessary. The Lenovo battery part number (examples only of what it might be, 4X50K14092, 01AV451), should be printed on the battery. Search online for the part number only, shown on your battery, to find suppliers that suit you best.

@heite

Perhaps check if the latest battery driver V10.1.10.0 is installed.

well, I changed the battery this May, it worked at first and now the issue happens again. btw the Lenovo staff checked my battery and AC adapter and said they have no problems.

@heite

Try uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery drivers in Device Manager and then restart the laptop in the normal manner which allows Windows to reinstall them and check if the problem is still there.

@jayeff sorry for the late reply. I tried this method before your reply and it didn't work, only I didn't restart my laptop to let it reinstall, I directly reinstalled the ACPI driver right after I uninstalled it. I don't know if that makes any different but I'll try it in your process later.

Last week I used my laptop with this ACPI driver was disabled. I thought laptop could get power directly through AC adapter when I disabled the driver, but it seems not because my laptop suddenly shut down yesterday... When I enabled the driver I saw the battery was out of power.

@jayeff I tried this method and it still didn't work ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

por

@jayeff Thanks, I would try this later. Funny thing is that I have been going through Lenovo China official website before and it doesn't have this battery driver, so I thought there was no any latest version. Hoping that is the point.
