SSD upgrade works well with Windows partition but freezes on MacOS

Hi! I upgraded my MacBook Pro 13 Model A1708 with a Samsung 990 Pro 1TB SSD.
Yeah, I know it's and overkill but I had it already.
The strange thing is that everything works fine on Windows but not on MacOS, where instead it crashes randomly few minutes after boot.

It's not an adapter problem as I already tried to change it with another model and it was useless.

I know that some people had success by upgrading with a Samsung 970 evo or with a Sabrent Rocket Nano NVMe PCIe M.2 2242 SSD.
The MacBook has a Proprietary* (PCIe 3.0) so it should be fine cause the Samsung is a PCIe 4.0 (has backward compatibility with limited speed).

Hope you can help me. And thank you in advance!

I think the problem is almost certainly with with the Samsung 990 Pro 1TB SSD.

The 980 and 990 SSDs are to fast for the system. You will never see the benefits of their performance.

I run a dual system 2015 A1398 15" with zero issues using a Sintech adapter and a 970 EVO Plus 1TB SSD.

One last question...

Did you had problem with the sleep option? Some users had to use hibernate to not have problem. I myself have this problem with my actual SSD. So whenever the laptop (Windows partition or MacOS partition) goes to sleep it crashes. So I have to use hibernate.

Sorry to bother but I noticed you didn't see this comment :P

@filippomanoli I rarely use windows on my mac but I didn't have this issue AFAIK .... It maybe caused by the 990 and the other adaptor, with the 970 EVO and the Sintech no issues with me.

This series is just difficult to swap out the custom SSD unit with an adapter and M.2 SSD. As it’s a hit or mis as the timings are so close any disturbance in the signal (using an adapter) tends to mess up the OS.

You can’t use the argument of MS Windows works so why macOS doesn’t as the way these OS’s use storage is very different! macOS is more virtual RAM based than Windows so it has heavier I/O flows to the drive.

Best to stick with a real Apple SSD or use a pin compatible drive (no adapter).

Thank you for your answer! You're right :)

Still, I think that I prefer to spend 100$ on an SSD that I can reuse on other laptops if my old macbook ever dies instead of using the real Apple SSD that'll have to throw away in the worst scenario.

Also, this latter is known for its failures to the point that Apple had to open a service programm for 128GB and 256GB SSD in 2018.

Is there a way to check if an Apple SSD is a faulty one or no? Are 512GB and 1TB free of issues?

Here in Italy you can no longer have it changed at the Apple Store, so you have to rely on retailers ç.ç

@filippomanoli - I have only installed the 512 & 1TB drives without any issues. OWC also made a pin compatible drive too!

@filippomanoli Get a Sintech adapter, these are very reliable and recommended above all others. Even if you did get an Apple SSD and the mac did one day fail for whatever reason you'll have no problem at all in naming your price to resell the Apple SSD as they are for sure in short supply and high demand. My system is really flying fast and smooth with the Samsung 970.

The firmware on the Samsung EVO 970 MUST be 2B2QEXM7 or 4B2QEXM - 1B2QEXM7 & 3B2QEXM7 have 'problems'.

It is best to check and update if necessary the FW on a windows desktop straight out the box BEFORE formatting it using Samsung Magician Software.

I think all the recent Samsungs shipped with the good 2B2QEXM7 (Mine did) if so there is no need to update that, but if it has the 1B2QEXM7 or 3B2QEXM7 then it needs to be updated to 2B2QEXM7 or 4B2QEXM7 respectively.

Links to the FW are found here https://semiconductor.samsung.com/consum... but Samsung Magician on a windows desktop is the easiest way. It cannot easily be done on a laptop or a mac for some weird reason.
