Laptop random restart with no error message

My laptop a GL63 8RE started about 4 weeks ago restarting randomly without any error message or reasons. The most times it has restarted is like 4times in a day and longest without restarting is like 1~2 days. During times that i have been gaming it luckily hasn't restarted on me and most the time it restarted on me was idle times when im just browsing the web or watching videos. I tried looking online which I believe it to be the psu problem seeing the 41 and 6008 event ID so I just bought a new one and switched it but it just happened again so I got the cable ac adapter and tried switching it and it still is restarting. At this point I gave up and came to ask for help. When ever it restarts everything just goes black and then after 2 seconds it comes back on. I also notice that after I had this problem when I log in it takes longer. Before it would take like 2 sec after entering my password to start everything up but now after enter password it would go black for like 10-15 sec before it would start logging in not sure if this is related. Also overheating isnt the problem since it usually restart while the laptop is quite cool. There are many times that id been gaming which it heats up a bit but havent restarted on me during those times. Let me know if i need to provide any other information.

It sounds like a frustrating issue! Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the random restart issue on your MSI GL63-8RE laptop:

  1. 1. **Check for Software Issues**

- **Update Windows**: Ensure your operating system is up-to-date.

- **Update Drivers**: Especially graphics drivers, chipset drivers, and BIOS/UEFI firmware.

- **Malware Scan**: Run a full system scan using reliable antivirus software to rule out any malicious software.

  1. 2. **Check for Hardware Issues**

- **RAM**: Faulty RAM can cause random restarts. Use a tool like Windows Memory Diagnostic or MemTest86 to check for memory issues.

- **Storage**: Check the health of your SSD/HDD using tools like CrystalDiskInfo.

- **Thermal Paste**: If you are comfortable, consider reapplying thermal paste on the CPU and GPU to improve heat dissipation.

  1. 3. **Power Settings**

- **Power Plan**: Ensure your power settings are set to "Balanced" or "High Performance" rather than "Power Saver".

- **Disable Fast Startup**: Sometimes fast startup can cause issues. Disable it by going to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable > Uncheck "Turn on fast startup".

  1. 4. **Check Event Viewer**

- **Event Viewer Logs**: Check the Event Viewer for critical errors that occur around the time of the restarts. Look for patterns or specific errors that might indicate the cause.

  1. 5. **BIOS Settings**

- **Reset BIOS**: Sometimes, resetting the BIOS to default settings can help resolve random restarts.

- **Update BIOS**: Ensure your BIOS is up-to-date with the latest version from MSI's website.

  1. 6. **Run Hardware Diagnostics**

- **MSI Diagnostic Tool**: Use MSI's diagnostic tool to run a full system check.

- **Built-in Diagnostics**: Many laptops have built-in diagnostics accessible via the BIOS/UEFI menu.

  1. 7. **Check Connections and Components**

- **Internal Connections**: Ensure all internal components and connections are secure.

- **Battery and Adapter**: Even though you've replaced the adapter, try running the laptop on battery alone or with the battery removed (if possible) to see if the issue persists.

  1. 8. **Clean Installation of Windows**

- **Backup Data**: Ensure all important data is backed up.

- **Clean Install**: Sometimes a clean installation of Windows can resolve persistent issues by eliminating software conflicts.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it might be worth contacting MSI support or taking the laptop to a professional technician for further diagnostics.

1. 7. Oh i just remember when i was switching the ac adapter at one point i forgot to plug back into the laptop and it starting restarting non stop so when its on battery alone it restarts non stop I suppose. The rest i havent the time to try them yet since its the middle of the night for me and i gotta sleep for work tomorrow but ill try them out soon as i have time the next few days and get back to you.

1.1. Windows update shows everything is up to date. Drivers update i've used MSI driver & app center to update everything and I looked into their website and all those they provide is either what i have or an older version than what i have. Also prior to coming here like 2~3 weeks ago I used some random driver update sites to update some drivers but not many as i found many saying they aren't too good and may cause problems. I've used window defender to scan for any virus that may cause this and got nothing.

1.2. Ive used Windows Memory Diagnostic but I wasnt present when it ended but when i was back it was just on the login screen so i guess it went well? MemTest86 says everything is good. CrystalDiskInfo show my HDD as good but SSD is unknown. As for thermal paste its when there is a problem with the heat but I dont play games often so the laptop is almost always in the 60c~ where it restarts. Somehow it has not once restarted during gaming which its not any intensive games so its somewhere around 70c~80c.

1.3. Ive changed it from power saver to balanced. Fast startup isnt an option since ive set all the options to only go to sleep and non of them go to shut down.

*

1.4. In event viewer Ive mentioned before that everytime it restarts I would find event id 41 and 6008 and no other error were there at the time of the restart.

*

1.5. Ive set the bio to default setting and the MSI site bio is the same one i have right now.

*

1.6. I couldnt find any MSI diagnostic tool at all and for the build in one I can only find Windows Memory Diagnostic.

*

1.7. Ive not tried running without the battery but when its not plugged in it will restart non stop.

*

1.8. Before trying everything first i dont want to reformat my laptop.

*

Most of these test was done not long ago so im just waiting to see if it will restart.

After over a day without restarting and getting my hopes up it has just restarted 10 minutes ago and with the same event id as always 41 and 6008. So im back to square one and left with either its some kinda hardware problem or driver. If I were to reformat my laptop should I hold off from getting all the windows update to see if it one of the driver from windows is the cause?

por

I finally got around to reformatting and it did nothing as it still randomly restarts and I also change all the psu and cables back to my old ones and thought it is still restarting it seems to be not as frequent. Something new that i discovered maybe important to fixing it is that while the cable is unplugged the laptop will continuously restart but if its plugged into the laptop but has no power the laptop will not continuously restart so it maybe have the the connector on the laptop to the cable. I found this when my room's fuse jumped and i had no power yet it didnt go restarting on me like when the laptop is not plugged into the cable. Hope someone might know whats the problem here or what I can do to fix it.
