You're going to have to explain your question better. The function of a key is to unlock, so if it unlocks, it's working and if it doesn't unlock, it's not working. I assume you know that much, but your question doesn't give us enough information to be able to give you an answer. What key? Is it the remote part or the mechanical part of the key you're concerned with? Are you unsure whether the immobilizer is functioning or not? Will the car not start?
Also, please indicate what year and model Volkswagen you're working on.

@kkzee83kkzee83 If it is a more modern car key the battery might be flat if it doesnt work. Refer to model specific owner's guide for how to fix.
