Cassette player's wheels not spinning at all ever :(

Hi, I recently took in a very old & dusty cassette player from my mother, who was going to throw it out. Today when I tried playing something on it, it didn't work.

It's an ITT Golf Cassette 230 which works fine in every other aspect but this one.

The problem is when pressing play, none of the wheels seem to turn and the only sound it makes is constant electric buzzing that only ceases once I pressed stop/eject.

Even without a cassette inside, the wheels still don't turn when pressing play, although (and I know you're not supposed to do this) when turning them manually, they could, meaning they're not stuck by anything.

I asked my mother, who gave me the player, but she said that it's just broken now and there's nothing I can do. Is that correct?
