Spilled water - used heater to dry - back panel cracking sound

I wanted to ask maybe you guys have an idea of what's going on.

I accidentally spilled less than a cups worth of sparkling water onto my computer, immediately turned it off, put it upside down and dryed it. For a bit less than an hour, I pointed a heater towards the keyboard, I put the temperature to more or less imitate the chassis getting hot under a huge load, or working outside in a hot environment.

The laptop still works fine, diag showed no errors, hopefully no corrosion, but after this, the sound appeared when pressing the left side bottom. It's driving my OCD, so I was wondering, Could the heater have caused it? I should probably have it checked out? I looked at the teardowns, and there doesn't seem to be anything that might be impacted.

Opinion appreciated, thank you!

Solução escolhida

It looks like the edge of the bottom cover is not fully seated, did you remove the bottom cover? If not it’s possible the battery underneath didn’t like the heat and has blistered up pressing from the inside outwards.

The seam edge should be flat like the other edges of the bottom cover which explains the sound you are hearing as you press on the bottom cover.

Hi Dan, thanks for the answer. I did not open the bottom cover. But also, I do not notice any visible swelling, and the area where the sound comes from, is above the battery. Pressing around the battery does nothing luckily. This is why I am even more confused.

@pr0d - You video shows a break between the upper case and the bottom cover in the left seam. Take a straight photo of this edge at a slight angle like you vid and post it here so I can see a better view.

Where you press is not as important as that’s just the area which is not supported.

@pr0d - OK, almost! The seam is we need, where the bottom cover meets the uppercase. But we don’t want a flat on image as we cant see the gap space between the two surfaces. Watch your vid note the angle you had the camera to the system emulate it just a bit closer.

por

@pr0d - Sorry what I had suspected doesn’t appear to be the case, it looks like the edge is tight. At this point I think you need to find an independent Mac repair shop to inspect things .

alright, will do that, thanks!
