Whirring sound plus occasional thunk!

Recently my fridge has started making a whirring sound lasting about 5-7 seconds. It occurs every 40-60 minutes. It appears to me to be more frequent when we go into the fridge or freezer more often. Occasionally it adds a loud thunk/thump and the end of the whirring. Any idea what may be happening?
