How to fix if system is MacBook Pro 2017 issue with keyboard in A1708?

I was able to open my Macbook 13in 2017 non touchbar laptop. I was able to rootcause to the reason why my laptop is not booting. The primary analysis is that whenever I connect keyboard cable to the motherboard(A1708), system is nAot at all booting and its drawing 5v/0A. But when I disconnect keyboard and retain all other connection system is booting safely(20V/0.5A) without any issues.

Note : I don't have any professional experience other than current analysis for my macbook.

Could you please guide me how can I fix it? Is it recommended to just replace the keyboard? if yes, can someone please share me the cheapest options to buy in Japan/India/Alibaba/amazon/Any other global vendors? Additionally, please share the procedures also.

Secondly, is it safe to continue with external keyboard? How to ensure that the disconnected cable is not shoring with any other components? I can see that right side speaker cable is on top of keyboard hence its difficult keep it in disconnected state. Please guide

No easy answers here 🙁

First I would double check things as the fan also shares the same connection to the logic board. It’s possible the fan is your problem and not the keyboard if you only disconnected the ribbon cable from the logic board. Here’s the fan unit if that’s the real issue MacBook Pro 13" Retina (A1708, A2159) Fan

Your first option for the keyboard is to just replace the full uppercase assembly, here’s the needed part MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Function Keys, Late 2016-2017) Upper Case while a bit more expensive it offers the easiest repair and given your symptoms you likely have liquid damage within the keyboard which is shorting out things.

Replacing the keyboard it’s self doesn’t address the inner connect/backlight which could be the real issue. The keyboards are riveted to the uppercase and are a bear to take out and you then need to remove the remaining plastic rivets and then use a ton of screws in place of the rivets. Make sure the keyboard comes with the screws.

So in the end I would recommend going with the upper assembly as being the easiest and replacing the keyboard a scary and difficult job for a first timer as you do need to be a bit vicious yanking it out.

Thank you very much for that meaningful insight regarding fan. Yes your insights is correct, fan is not working when that cable is disconnected from motherboard.

Additionally, I have checked by connecting the keyboard cable from motherboard and disconnected fan cable but system was not booting(issue reproduced). So, can we ignore fan?

Yes, you are right. I'm suspecting a liquid damage at keyboard. I have done some learnings on liquid damange. According to the attached picture in question, red color in bottom of layout shows that its a liquid damange.

Do we need to check the back light/any other components in that circuit? Keyboard cost is still high. It would be great if we can pinpoint the component for narrowing down the cost.

According to above video, he has used some liquid to clean. Can we use those for our particular case in keyboard?

@thomas19344 - The liquid if flux for cleaning solder connections. The keyboard damage is more within the keys or the backlight.

Sorry I think your expectations on a simple repair and cheap is not likely. Liquid spills tend to be expensive. Time to save your Pennies!

I’m completely ok to spend as much as it needed but looking for the best possible option at cheapest as possible as we can haha😜

i was limiting the budget mainly because Apple was charging 75% of the original product cost for their repair claiming that Everything is down which I was able to bring up my machine with disconnection of keyboard and fan. Thanks to ifixit and lot of YouTube video contributors.

I’m looking forward to bringing back life to MacBook

@danj Thank you very much buddy. I was able to compeletly bring back life to my macbook by replacing the keyboard also. Thank you very much for your support and providing detailed analysis.
