Add an hdmi output to the iMac

Hi all,

So I have a late 2013 27" iMac with a broken display and I was wondering if there is a way to get an hdmi output directly from the motherboard - soldering an hdmi port to the board instead of the display outout or something similar and use the iMac with an external monitor/tv. I tried different adapters through the mini dp port but with no satisfactory results.

Can you explain what the problem you are encountering with the mDP or Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter/s you are using here.

As far as adding anything internally, I don’t see any way that’s just the same as the adapters output. This series doesn’t have spare PCI lines to even connect another GPU board internally. There was a Thunderbolt connected external chassis which could then support a standard PCIe GPU board which could offer a HDMI port. But that’s quite expensive solution and I don’t see it offering anything here. These external GPU setups where intended for rendering videos, not really for the external connection.

Hi Dan,

For most part it's an unstable connection/flickery image, Resolution issues. I tried 3 different adapters, 1 VGA & 2 HDMI ones all with the same issues. I saw some videos where ppl where turning their iMacs to external display by changing logic board with other boards and was wondering if someone kind of reverse engineered it to what I was looking for :).

Anyway I appreciate your help Dan

@bedredinmustafa - Gutting the iMac converting it into an external display is possible but that’s the end of this being a computer as those parts are trashed!

So do you have a second system or is this your only one?

There is no other option other than the adapter. But! Maybe the port needs repair. Sometimes the grounding clips fatigue so the connection is not firm.

@Dan yes I do, was just thinking to use it as a video streaming PC connected to my TV.

As for the grounding you mentioned might definitely be related to that as every now and then when plugging/unplugging the cable I had some spikes.

But yeah as you said, this might have been it with this PC.

I think I should look for an used mini pc or similar for my purpose :)

@bedredinmustafa - So converting is not the direction then.

The logic board would need to be removed to gain access to the board connectors which hold the grounding spring clips. I wouldn’t try bending them as that just weakens them. Instead I’ve wedged a piece of wire under the worse edge using a bit of epoxy to hold it in place. The connector it’s self is not really reparable otherwise.
