Some things just don't quite fit in.

Cateye Volt800 Tear Down

I have a Cateye Volt800 bike light with a broken micro usb charging port. I am endeavouring to get inside to see if the port is replaceable but am struggling to get in. I can get the lens off to reveal the led circuit board & have remove 2 screws but this has not released the board. Has anyone had any experience with these lights or could offer some direction. I attach a few photos which might help. Thank you all.

Maybe this disassembly video can help you. Btw, I see no photos attached to your question

Thanks. I have seen this video which helped me remove the lens but the inner workings seem to be more firmly fixed within the body of the light than that in V80 in the video. Thanks for the advice re photos which I have now worked out how to add/upload. Thanks for taking an interest. David

@davidcarri11845 try to use a little bit more force, maybe it's stuck due to dirt etc... If you're able to disassemble it, think about creating the disassembly guide on ifixit

Hi - tried some brute force/hard knocks but all very firmly fixed. Have tried jamming a screwdriver in the slot on the rear/black end & tried turning plate but no movement. The led plate at the front is loose & can be rotated a little but the wires coming through prevent it coming away. I think I will look to unsolder the 4 wires & see whether that plate will come out.

I will certainly do a tear down guide if & when I manage this! Thanks for your thoughts David

The same work was carried out. When the wire is separated, the substrate and the internal system are separated, so that the substrate is separated into the front part and the internal system is separated into the rear part very easily. However, it was concluded that it was not a repairable system.

Lead can't be easily melted either

Thanks for responding. I have eventually managed to open it up. The usb charging port is damaged & I am waiting for some replacements to find one that will fit. I agree, it does look difficult to repair the electronics further. David

Greetings David,

I’m Timothy from Japan. I have a Volt 1700 with the same charging port issues and have not for the life of me found out how to get inside to replace the port. Just wanted to wish you good luck and get linked to this post for updates. Have a great day.

Hello, could you expand a little more on how you managed to open it up? I'm at the same stage as your original post - would love to know how you got into it in the end.

Hi all,

I have cateye volt 400 which has similar design as volt 800.I first unscrewed the li-ion battery from the light. Then unscrewed the three tiny screws present at the bottom part of the light that attaches the mounting bracket to the light.Placed the separated light module part vertically on flat surface with the lens facing upwards.I then placed a microfibre towel on the lens cover to avoid damage to lens cover and hammered it with a hammer. The hammering causes the lens cover lens and the led circuit to get pushed backward. Then I used the hole provided for micro usb port to insert the flat head screw driver and push the led module outside.I have attached photos of the disassembled parts of my cateye volt 400.
