iPad 6th generation - black screen

Hello all. I have an iPad 6 (wifi cellular) with no previous repairs that "black" screens quite often. You can tell it's still on, (plugging it in you get the chime) but nothing on screen, the power and home button do nothing. Spamming the power button will eventually get the screen to light up, once at the lock screen, you can enter the passcode and the iPad works normally. It should also be noted that I seemingly can't "Force Restart" the device, pressing vol up, down and holding the power button brings up the "slide to power off" screen, continued hold only brings you back to the lock screen, the device doesn't restart.

This is quite a weird one for me. All the buttons seem to function normally when unlocked (nothing stuck or sticking). The screen does of a crack in it, but only a couple millimetres in length in the bottom right corner. The iPad is fully updated and has memory space to spare.

My buddy (the owner) wants me to replace the LCD, however I have many doubts that would fix the problem, and would probably be a waste of time and money. I have a feeling that reseting the device might fix it, but he'd rather not lose information.

Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

  • Although the crack in the screen is small, it's still possible that it's causing issues with the display. If the crack is near the touch screen, it could be interfering with the iPad's touch sensor. It's also possible that there is some other hardware damage that is causing the issue. If the issue persists after trying the above software fixes, it may be worth taking the iPad to a repair shop to have it checked for hardware damage.
  • Before attempting any major fixes or repairs, it's always recommended to backup your data. You can backup your iPad via iCloud or iTunes. Once your data is backed up, you can try to restore your iPad to its factory settings. To do this, go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Note that this will erase all data from the iPad, so make sure to back up everything beforehand.

Thanks for the reply. The crack is very tiny, and only along the edge, nowhere near the actual digitizer, but anything is certainly possible.

I made a mistake, by holding the home button and power button I am able to perform a hard restart, however that doesn't change anything. Although in that process I did notice when the iPad isn't responding (black screen) I can press the home bottom as much as I want, the screen won't light up....it's only until I spam the power button that it eventually comes to life and I am then able to unlock the iPad with the home button.

As mentioned, the owner would prefer to not reset the iPad, but I do agree, that is very good step before performing any hardware troubleshooting/repairs.
