Can't unlock screen, display not waking up

Hello i am facing problem with unlocking my XS Max.

The power button seems to work good because I can hear the screenshot sound while the screen is not waken up.

I can lock the screen every time I want but the problem occurs when I am trying to unlock it. System is definitely reacting to pressing unlock button/waking by raising the phone/tapping the screen to unlock, but the display is not waking up. I can hear locking screen again after pressing lock button several times. Still black. Sometimes for most of a day I can unlock it without facing any problems.

I noticed that the problem occurs more often when the phone is plugged to charger/charging for a longer while.

I don't also know if it is good, but I am charging XS Max with my thunderbolt socket in iMac 24 and the battery seems to charge not too fast, and not reaching 100% (battery life 85%).

I am wondering that is any possibility that the problems reason is between charging port and display? Any ideas guys?

Thanks for help.

Hi Jan,

There's honestly not much connection between the charging system and the display system on an iPhone, so from an electrical engineering point of view it doesn't seem likely there's a correlation between the two. From a software viewpoint, who knows what evil lurks in the heart of Apple Inc.?

The power button is pretty simple; either the button is pressed or it isn't. So if it works under one set of circumstances then it pretty much always works under all circumstances. Given that I'd say it's most likely not a hardware problem.

Which means we should really be looking at software as the most likely cause of the problem. I'd suggest backing up your phone and doing a full restore with iTunes. If you want to really get down to it, look up DFU mode and do the restore that way; it's the most complete software update possible.

But yeah, you want to eliminate software as the source of the problem first before trying to throw hardware at it. So try a restore and let's see where you are after that.

Given the age of your phone, it's quite likely the battery may be getting tired and ready for replacement. There's an app for your computer called Coconut Battery that seems to be popular among the repair technicians who frequent iFixit, so it might be worthwhile downloading it and using it to check the status of the battery on your phone. If your battery is having issues - and it sounds like it may be - the app will give you a good idea of whether it's time to replace it or not.

Ok. Sorry for not mentioning that before, but i have already tried reinstalling whole system with DFU mode, i tried downgrading from Beta 16.5 to 16.4.1 because i wondered that there is maybe some Beta bug. The problem appeared on both system versions. It even appears on fresh installed iOS before restoring any backup.

So it seems that i havent got any more software solutions.

@dadibrokeit I am sure now that problem occurs 90% times at charging phone. When its disconnected from lightning port everything seems to work fine.

@jankowal Ah, okay that does change things. Try the battery app then come back and add screen shots of the results to your question so that if there's something to take note of, hopefully the technicians on here will chime in with suggestions.

Otherwise if it was my phone I'd try replacing the battery first, then if it still wasn't resolved I'd probably go with a new lighting port assembly.

Unfortunately your problem seems to be unique so we don't have anything in the way of precedent to guide us in figuring out what's going on with it.
