Battery randomly loses a lot of charge when in heavy use

My macbook will function perfectly during casual use and can last up to 6/7 hours when watching youtube or netflix however when using multiple apps or opening something like visual studio my battery can go from 100% down to power off in under 10 minutes. I have noticed that when it powers off it is hotter than normal and after plugging in the charger it will show the battery is actually still got a lot of charge left. It will not allow me to turn on until I have connected the charger though. I have bought a replacement battery that will arrive soon but I am looking for any other solutions before going through with pulling out a potentially working battery. As a final note I have coconut battery installed and the Maximum battery capacity is at about 3400 mAh however during heavy usage this value fluctuates up and down and I have even seen it at 300 mAh.

I suspect that either the battery is simply worn out and desperately in need of calibration, or there is a specific process draining the battery. A new MacBook of your model has a battery capacity of 5,400 mAh - which is a full 2,000 less than what you say coconut battery reports it as. Calibrate the battery by following an online resource such as this one by Newertech. If this doesn't help, then you may be experiencing a bug affecting macOS 12.2, causing excess battery drain. If you haven't already, update to macOS 12.2.1. Other online tools or your built-in battery usage history may help pinpoint the exact process(es) responsible for the battery drain. There may be processor incompatibilities with certain apps, such as Visual Studio. If so, there isn't anything you can do other than update the apps and hope for the best.

Thanks for such a detailed answer. I ended up running through a calibration which simply did not help at all but was worth the try. Just installed the new battery and I am going through the draining and "calibrating" process now.

Just a few tiny notes for anyone looking at this in the future: It was silly of me to not include the OS version I am running I was and am on Ventura (13.2) and the maximum capacity of the MBP 2017 battery is 4790 mAh just in case any one feels like there macbook is a lot lower than Clays mentioned 5400 mAh.

Just a few tiny notes for anyone looking at this in the future: It was silly of me to not include the OS version I am running I was and am on Ventura (13.2) and the maximum capacity of the MBP 2017 battery is 4790 mAh just in case any one feels like there macbook is a lot lower than Clays mentioned 5400 mAh.
