Closed Captions won't turn off

Model is TH-P42X14A (ancient I know), and I've read previous answers to this question with Viera TVs. However, on this model's remote, there is no CC button and pressing STTL doesn't work. How do I turn off Closed Captions, please?

@teejay does it have a "Menu" button? That should open the TV's Menu screen==>Setup==>CC

Hi, OldTurkey, as I said in my question, I've read lots of answers to this question (seems like a very common problem) and this model's remote has no CC button (it's an old TV) and the STTL button doesn't work when pressed. Here's what the remote looks like. [image|2857274]. Thanks, anyway.

@teejay333 I took the liberty of copying your image link to your question. The iFixit software doesn't allow for pictures within comments, so when you need to add one it's best to go back and edit your original post to add it.

Thanks so much, Jerry W. I thought there was a hitch!

Our TX-32JS360B has no STTL button on the remote. Would like to know if there is a simple way to turn them on and off, without delving through yards if menus.

Hi Tracey,

Okay, I found the user manual for your TV online, and the only reference to subtitles is indeed the STTL button.

There doesn't appear to be any menu item that lets you turn subtitles on and off, at least not that I could find.

What is your input source? Are you running a cable/satellite/streaming box? Is there any chance the subtitles are coming from your cable box rather than the TV itself? Do you have another source you can try and see if the subtitles appear there too?

As a last resort, you could try Restore back to Shipping Conditions. The procedure is shown on page 32 of the user manual, but it's relatively straight-forward.

  • Press Menu
  • Select "Setup"
  • Select "System Menu"
  • Select "Shipping Condition"
  • Set

Hi, Jerry, I think you hit the nail on the head: it's the input, I think. We watch TV via a Panasonic DVD Recorder. When that is on, the CCs appear; when it's off, CCs disappear. I still have manuals for both (thank you for that) and will try your suggestion. Thank you very much!

You were right. Thank you. It was the STTL button on the input (DVDR not TV) that had to be turned off. All gone now. Thanks again.

I have had mine for 5 years, it was donated to me with no remote. Your suggestion is a sure godsend.

Hi there Tracey,

So it seems like you need to reset the T.V. in general. You can do to settings and do so. If there is none, try unplugging the T.V. for 30 seconds to 1 minute, then plug back in. If it still doesn't work, try finding a reset button on the back of the T.V. Hope this helps.

With regards,

Duck

Hi, Duck, I'll check this out tonight. Thank you. BTW, we discovered that CCs only appear when the TV is being watched via the DVD Recorder. When that is turned off, the TV has no CCs. I'll get back to you tomorrow. Thanks again.

Hi, Duck, I worked it out following Jerry's post below: CCs only appear when TV is being viewed via DVD recorder. It it was the STTL button on the DVDR (not TV) that had to be turned off. One for the record! Thanks anyway.

Hi @teejay333

Use a digital camera or the camera in a mobile phone to check that the STTL button on the remote is actually working.

Turn on the camera or open the camera app in the phone and point the end of the remote that is normally pointed towards the TV, towards the camera lens so that you can see it in the LCD screen of the camera or phone.

Press the Power button on the remote and there should be a light at the end of the remote when seen in the LCD screen. As you know that the Power button is working, this is just to prove that you're doing it correctly.

Next press the STTL button and check that the light turns on.

If not it may be a faulty or dirty STTL button contact in the remote control

Hi @vexorg

To turn off/on the subtitles in your model you need to press the Language button on the remote.

Here's an image of the remote control unit, from the user manual for your model.

Thank you that is the solution. It works. Too bad on Panasonic to make it more complex than a simple button for my 96 year old mother-in-law. Had to write 3 pages of instructions for her.

por

@vexorg

You could always try setting up the "My button 1 (*)" option (#24 in list) to function as the subtitle on/off if the Language button has too many options.

Just a thought.

Cheers
