Burned out trackpad connector after water damage

I spilled a small amount of water onto my 21 MacBook Pro m1, and the computer immediately turned off. I opened up the rear case and found the connector between the logic board and track pad ribbon cable to have been partly burnt out (both on the board and also the cable) Is there a way to fix this without having to replace the whole logic board? Thanks a lot.

jpearson85, Yes, it’s possible to fix (assuming it’s just the connector(s) that are gone), but it will require board level repair.

It means that you will have to use micro soldering skill and equipment in order to replace the connectors, if they are burnt. You will also have to assess further damage, as you could have a cascade effect on water damage.

The first step is to disassemble everything and using some >99% IPA (isopropyl alcohol) and a toothbrush or even better an <Ed’s safe brush, then clean off everything (gently, but firmly) that’s showing damage. Some of the components are tiny, and can be broken / ripped off if using too much force.

Once everything has been thoroughly cleaned, and you have inspected everything with a magnifying glass; If it looks OK, then put it back together to test and then do a new assessment.

The work in replacing the connectors requires the use of some “pro” level tools, hot air rework station, microscope, +++ It’s not advisable to do your first board level repair on a device you’re using. Recommended to practice a LOT first, in order to gain skill. Many people use iCloud locked boards to practice on, as they serve no other purpose, and can be found pretty cheap around the net.

Thanks a lot. That’s great news that it can be fixed but it sounds like it’s well above my skill level. I’ll look for a local technician here in France. Thanks for your help.
