@bsheck - I find it hard to believe you have a VRAM issue as this is not the symptoms of that.

Sadly, this MacBook Air system doesn’t use discrete GPU’s which in turn use VRAM. The Air’s use the Intel CPU’s integrated graphics engine which in turn uses main RAM for video.

So, what is the problem then? I fear the CPU unit which has two chips mounted within it has a failed chip which is the graphics chip. I would carefully remove the logic board and the heat sink to inspect the chips I think you’ll find the smaller one fractured. MacBook Air 13" Early 2014 Logic Board Replacement

@danj So, if I remove the logic board and find this is the issue, I still have to replace the board, yes?

por

@bsheck - Sadly, yes.

Solução escolhida

Hi

As far as I know VRAM isn’t replaceable as it’s parts of the GPU die

The only way of replacing it would be to replace the CPU(it’s has vram and GPU on it)

Also are you 100% sure that it’s the vram?

What isn’t you macbook doing ,it could be a issue that we could solve:-)

Hopefully this helps

Any questions please ask

Thanks:-)

Good afternoon. The computer will only operate in safe mode. If I try to start regularly it immediately shut down. All the common fixes were tried Resets etc..... I had a computer guy check it and he stated it was a bad vram issue. It's been reset, new OS and hard drive re formatted. No luck. It works perfectly in safe mode and has WiFi

@bsheck

Might be worth a trip to the Apple Store:-)

Sounds like a deep software issue

@bsheck

Also

Does it throw up a error code if you hold D on start up

If you can get that far…

por

I'm sure Apple will tell me it's either not fixable or not worth it. And no error codes. I think the computer tech wasa bel to get into the nuts and bolts and thats how it was determined bad VRAM

por

@bsheck

It’s just that safe mode turns unnecessary software features off,which indicates that the hardware seems fine if it works in safe mode

It could just be a firmware issue of some sort

It’s up to you where you want to go with it;-)

Thanks:-)
