Screen not working but touch works

Hi my iPhone is kinda working on the edge.

First thing that went bad was battery life. I wanted to change the battery but I didn’t have the money for it at the time so I got used to shorter battery life.

Later the battery started being puffed. So it lifted the screen a little. I did not notice it at first.

After I had the phone at the water park I noticed that water got inside from behind the screen. The phone was boot looping all day. On the next day it started working again but Face ID was not working anymore and neither the silent button.

Two months later the screen just randomly died. I was on the phone texting my friend. Locked the phone. Two minutes later I got a text so I looked on my phone and the screen was black. I thought that the battery died, but I turned on flashlight somehow.

So I can’t see what I’m doing on the phone, but it is working. I don’t know what to do.

I opened the phone since the seal was broken already. Took off the screen. Cleaned the contacts with some isopropyl alcohol. Didn’t help.

Should I replace the screen?

Is it worth to fix the phone?

It's really hard to say how much damage the water did. However, if your phone has been open for a while, you have a combination of issues.

First is the swollen (puffed) battery. It's a fire hazard to keep using and charging it, so I'd say to replace that ASAP.

In addition, having the phone be open so long there's probably more than water park water in there (dust and whatnot) so it's likely that there has been other damage to your screen and board.
At this point, I'd say you have 3 options:

  1. If you're able to open it up and assess the damage, I'd start there.
  2. Take the phone to a reliable repair shop and have them triage the device.
  3. It may be that replacing your phone is the best one if repairing it yourself or through a service is in accessible to you.

If you'd like, send an email to community@ifixit.com (our staff inbox) and let me know the county/state/country you live in and I can help to find you any local repair cafes.
