1 The only time iPod works is when its plugged in.
The only time I can get this ipod to turn on is when I have it plugged into the computer. while its plugged in everything will work. As soon as i unplug it the screen slowly fades out. When i try to turn it on or reset it nothing happens at all. Im guessing it just needs a new battery but didn't want to replace it if thats not the problem

Since it plays and functions while it is plugged in, your problem is the battery. Just like Richdave says, replacing it should resolve your issues,
