Broken DVD Ribbon cable?

I replaced (second time) a dying DVD drive in my Wii. This time the power LED is red, but the device won't turn on or accept a disc. I tried to bend the DVD ribbon to make it easier to put in, but it felt like I bent it too far and broke the cable. Is this the behavior of the Wii not seeing a DVD drive? Is the solution to replace the DVD ribbon?
