Marshall Stockwell volume regulator broken

Hello,

My portable Bluetooth speaker Marshall Stockwell fell from a height and broke the volume control and knob.

Can anyone tell me the volume control part number and how or where can I find it?

Hi @datooooooo ,

Open the speaker and take a detailed picture of the broken knob. Most important is if it has any letters printed on it. Only with that information we would be able to find a replacement.

Alternatively, if you already figured out which part it is, we could help you to find a replacement part!

Update (02/25/2022)

Ummm unfortunately this is not enough to find a proper replacement.

The R103 might mean 10 kOhm. Typically, the last number means the number of ceros you add to the first numbers, but this is not always followed by all manufacturers.

Having a quick look in one of my fav distributors https://www.mouser.co.uk/c/passive-compo...

There's one that matches in shape and color: https://www.mouser.co.uk/datasheet/2/414...

It sheems the metal shaft and the footprint are similar to the ones on the pictures. However, before you can conclude if this is a suitable part, there are other features on the potentiometer that needs to match with the one that you have: resistance, number of detents, if linear/log, etc...

I also see that the potentiometers are wired and connected to the board? Can you confirm that?

Besides, have you tried to turn on the speaker? Does it work electrically? I mean, has the knob broken mecanically, electrically, both?

If the knob if only broken mecanically, and given that it’s hard to find a replacement… Have you consider fixing the knob instead of replace it? With a proper epoxy, it might look like new… https://www.jbweld.com/product/j-b-weld-...

Hello Emilio,

Thank you for your support,

Yes, it works well just the knob to the controller connection shaft is broken.

Your provided list of potentiometers is very similar to the needed one, just instead of 6 connectors on micro-pot and on marshall, it has 3.

I decided to go with your advice and try to fix the knob with proper epoxy, only thing I'm worried about is that the knob of this potentiometer is retractable and going up and down giving the volume button to hide so less epoxy can not hold in properly and more epoxy can make an obstacle for retracting.

However, I will try and update you with the results.

Thanks a lot

David

I strongly recommend you to take this to a reputable repair shop. Often used music stores have a guy they work with…

…If you insist on repairing this yourself, first contact Marshall and ask if they can supply you with the correct part. Send them the model number and tell them which part it is. This is you best and easiest option for DIY.

If they cant or wont help you in that way, ask if they will supply you with either a schematic w/ parts list, or can give you the correct part number for the volume control pot.

If that fails, its the hard road… you will need to remove the PCB, then unsolder the micro-pot from the PCB and inspect it for part numbers. Use a magnifying glass and bright light if nothing is obvious.

If you find no numbers you will need to do a manual part search. First test the part and determine the maximum resistance. Then using a visual match figure out what ‘package’ the micro-pot is.

locate a replacement, and cross-reference if necessary.

Hello

Have Update:

I teardown speaker, tried to remove the PCB where a potentiometer soldered but couldn't. it's really hard to do without damaging the speaker case, so I left doing it and simply glued it for temporary use because there was very limited access to fix it properly without complete stripping down.

Same time I purchased a broken speaker as a spare part and plan to replace and collect one good from two.

Hey @datooooooo, nice that you figured out a reasonable solution for your problem. Companies often work directly with the manufacturers and they are able to keep those parts out of market. Unfortunately, as you experienced, they don't provide support for a proper fixing.

However, given the nature of the broken part, I think you did right. Couple of drops of glue/epoxy was the easiest option, and maybe the temporary use becomes years!
