Just upgraded ram to 16 GB. Computer is much slower?

Hi guys!

I just upgraded my Mid 2012 Macbook pro from the stock 4GB ram to 16GB ram and it feels much heavier, takes a long time to boot and beach balling with 2 or 3 apps open.

I had upgraded to SSD 4 or 5 years ago and it was working fine but a few weeks ago it started beach balling with too many chrome tabs or heavy excel sheets.

You’re likely facing the dreaded SATA cable breakdown! Your Hard Drive Cable Is A Ticking Time Bomb

I often encounter this symptom with people bringing in there Unibody MacBookPro’s. I always replace the cable and as the BeetsTech article recommends I add a strip of electricians tape on the uppercase to help protect the cable.

One thing that’s also important is not creasing the cable! The sharp bends damage the thin foil wires inside. Instead I use an old BIC pen ink straw using it as a forming brake to help curl the cable where it needs to bend around. You don’t want the cable to exceed the radius of the straw.

One last think here is you should backup your drive and then reformat it as often when the drive is in this state it has errors that need to be addressed otherwise your data may become damaged.

I switched around the RAM modules and what I found was my computer was running great when I install the old 2GB module with a 8GB module. (10GB total)

Isn't that strange?

@bsllw - Sounds like you got some bad or incorrect RAM SO-DIMM's

Where did you buy them?

There are some sellers which resell used RAM as new so make sure you've gotten the correct RAM spec'ed units: 204-pin PC3-12800 DDR3 1600 MHz

I got it from amazon, sold by amazon. and the RAMs are crucial DDR3L-1600-SODIMM (CT2K8G3S160BM)

por

@bsllw - Well Crucial is a good brand, but I've seen some screechy products coming out of Amazon and Google online markets.

Some folks relabel the lower quality parts (knockoff) with a better named brand.

I think you need to find a better source, getting this older RAM is getting harder as the industry has moved on to faster, bigger and newer interfaces.

You could try using just one 8GB SO-DIMM (nothing else) to see how your system runs just with that one try one slot and then the other, then try the other 8GB SO-DIMM using a memory tester app do they report the same slot to slot and 8GB SO-DIMM to 8GB SO-DIMM?
