Unplugging optical drive in order to avoid sound on startup?

In order to avoid the sound from the optical drive on startup, I decided to just unplug the optical drive internally. However, I just left the wire fully unplugged but still hovering over its port. Could this cause any problems? I don’t think the back of the case is applying any pressure on connector but I’m not really sure. Maybe there is a better way to solve this problem?

The reason I asked what you had is my system isn’t doing running the optical drive that often. My OS test system is a 13” 2012 MacBook Pro.

Let’s make sure your settings are set correctly. go into your preferences > Startup Disk and see if resetting it helps (with the optical drive plugged in), Next lets also reset the SMC and NVRAM

Let’s see where that leads us.

@danj Before I do the steps outlined above, I just want to clarify that I don't really ever want to hear the optical drive. The reason is because I am a student, and I'm trying to avoid that awkward moment in class when its silent and you (the optical drive) makes a loud noise and everyone looks at you. However, if the drive running not "that often" means almost never then I'll go ahead and do the resets for sure.

@tecrpr - It rarely goes! I think yesterday it went once. I often leave my system running and if it goes to sleep it only goes to Stage-1 not Stage-2

Do you put your system to sleep (or let it go to sleep from no action) or close the lid Vs shutdown?

por

@danj I just recently got this macbook, however I do shutdown the computer if I know I won't use it for a while (1hr or more) and if I'm going to come back to using it soon then I will just shut the lid. I haven't manually put it to sleep or let it go to sleep from no action yet.

So lets check the startup disk setting and reset SMC & NVRAM. Let's see where that gets us.

@danj I did all the steps, and as far as I can tell it still makes the sound every time it boots up.

If you don’t want to use your optical drive you can remove it using this guide. If you just want to leave it unplugged I would recommend putting some anti-static tape around the head of the optical drive cable and then using the anti-static tape to tape it down so it doesn’t move around internally.

@zpl Thanks for the answer. I don't want to remove it as I'd probably put it back in eventually, so that's just a waste of time. If I were to just leave the wire hanging and without anti-static tape what's the worst that can happen? Is that more of a safety precaution or will my whole machine brick in a matter of weeks if I don't use the tape?

If you leave the cable disconnected without tape to secure it there's a possibility that it will jiggle around and touch other components. It's probably unlikely, but left loose like that there's a chance it could scrape up against the logic board or bridge two connections and cause a short.
