Black line started to grow from bottom. Retina display.

Hello,

my MBP’s Retina display started to grow a black line from a bottom. I shut down the pc and leave It for a while. When I reopen It It was all gone. However after 30 minutes black line showed again.

Further information that I think will help you to diagnose:

I saw similar problems on forums. They have told that It may be because of overheating. I downloaded an app for fan control. When I burst the fans for a while, I realized that the effect decreases.

In a similar question in iFixit, a tech guy named @danj asked “do you have it sitting strong sunlight at anytime?“. Recently I moved my table near my window and studying from there. I think I left it under sunlight.

From bottom to top, the colors are like this: Black -> dark purple -> green -> then healthy colors.

Pictures from the display is attached.

For the ones that having same problem:

I left my pc to rest for one day. because I was afraid. Then after realizing that the problem intensifies when temperature of the Mac increases, I downloaded a software to adjust fans to work more sensitively.

Now fans of the computer are working harder but the problem does not show anymore. I think this solution will work for a while.

Here is the link for the fan control software:

Sadly there just isn’t anything you can do to fix this without replacing parts. While you can reduce the effect by cleaning out dust from the fans and the heat transfer fins and not cook your system by either environmental heat or running your system hard for long periods of time. Or, use your system on a surface that can block the vents line a bed or rug.

What you are encountering is an overheated T-CON board once it starts showing bars at the bottom or top of the display its fatigued and will need replacing. This is caused by the breakdown of the scanning logic timing so your logic over scans or under scans the sweep that draws the image onto the LCD screen.

LCD’s use a method of scanning to paint the image from the controlling logic. Back in the day with Cathode Ray tubes an electron beam is wiped across the screen to excite the phosphor on it to create white light (like your kitchen florescent light does). Here the beam is very narrow and is controlled by electro magnets! Starting at the top from the left to the right line by line to the bottom of the screen. Here the T-CON logic controls which image cell is lit one by one in a similar manor. But if its timing is off it can prematurely write or end a given scan run which causes these dark lines.

Here’s the needed part: MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Late 2016-2017) Display Assembly and here’s the guide you’ll need to follow MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar Late 2016 Display Assembly Replacement if you want to fix this permanently.

To prevent this to happen again you’ll need to run a good thermal management tool. I find this one offers the needed features to manage it TG Pro.

Hello Dan, Thank you for your quick answer!

I want to ask, is it possible to replace it with normal MacBook screen instead of Retina. Would it change the cost?

One other quick question, would I hurt my MacBook by using this display for a while?

por

@fthdrmzzz - Sorry its not possible to use any other display other than the one that was designed to be used with your system.

As far as hurting your system, all you'll do is see more and more grey/back area at the bottom and at the top of the display as the timing continues to fail. At some point the screen will be so bad you'll want to replace it.
