Asus G751JY Laptop won't power on (no lights)

Model: G751JY-T7094H

Hi,

The laptop stopped suddenly while in use and since I couldn’t start it again. No lights on even when plugged in. I tested the power supply and the multimeter indicated 19.5v as expected. I also tested the battery (not sure though if it is meaningful) and the expected voltage was what I read. I replaced the CMOS battery (I don’t know if this was necessary).

I need some guidance about what to replace. Which tests can I perform to identify the culprit? A new motherboard is pricy. My battery is old (5 years with daily usage), can a dead battery prevent the lights from turning on and the laptop too? Is it the DC connector? How can I know?

I hope someone can help.

Dead batteries can leech enough power to keep a laptop from starting. You can firstly try removing the dead battery and then starting it from the outlet power.

If there is sufficient electrical connection, the multimeter will beep, or else it would probably mean that power cords are faulty.

Otherwise check out these methods and if any of them works.

jpfroud, failures like this are difficult to diagnose. You would need a schematic and board layout to determine what is going on. I suggest that you start off with replacing the battery. Should further troubleshooting be necessary you will at least have a known-well starting point.
