Screen distortion: six columns with horizontal purple lines

As far as I can tell my Macbook Pro 2018 is fully functional, including touchbar and fingerprint recognition. The screen however has an (overlay?) distortion by six columns, five of which are stacked with thin horizontal purple lines. These are more intense on a black background, less so on a white. One column shows no purple lines, but gives distortion of the screen content.

The problem starts immediately after opening up the lid. It seems linked to the angle of the opening of the screen. Sometimes the columns magically disappear with the lid at a certain angle and give a clear screen for days, as long as I did not close the lid.

My mac repair shop (not the Apple Store) has seen this problem before. They think the screen (or the connect with the bottem) is broken. As the top of the Macbook cannot be opened or repaired - it needs replacement.

Questions: is this a known issue ? Is Apple aware of this problem ?
