Something got fried inside, but it still booted up. Is it safe to use?

Hello,

I have either the mid 2012, or mid 2013 model, I can't check now.

I've tried to connect an external DVD reader/writer external drive thingy.

My system did not recognise it when plugged via USB, and I've tried plugging in the power adapter to the DVD drive.

The moment I've plugged the adapter to the external drive, my screen went black. I thought, my battery might have gone dead, so I've connected my charger. After It didn't wake following pressing the power button, I've immediately disconnected the external drive , and focused on trying to get my screen/ mac to turn on.

Well. That didn't go well. I've half emembered that some time ago when my screen went black, I solved it by pressing the power button for longer. So I did that. I held it down, for ca. 20 second maybe, whilst it was plugged in. It started overheating and a puff of acrid smoke appeared on the left hand side next to the screen.

I've closed it, hoping it will not catch fire! The fan kept cooling it for a long while, I put it in the fridge, to both keep it cooler and to put some distance from it to ease my panic, and in the fridge it made the booting sound.

After all the drama has finished, I've opened it, and it finished booting. It seems to work fine.

But - the area right next to the charging port is still hot.

I worry that if I plug the charger in, it might short-circuit, and break break my laptop, or start a fire. Is it safe to use?

What precautions should I take, and what signs should I watch out for? If I plug it in and it starts smoking again, what should I do?

Thank you!

Solução escolhida

Replace the DC in board before hooking up the magsafe. What you have accomplished I have not heard of before. You have put two power sources into the DC in board. You will be safe running the Mac on its battery until you install a new dc in board. If you try and charge it with the one that is in there you will damage the logic board and you will have to send it away for repair.
