Did the GPU fail? Black screen

Hello,

I have a late 2011 15” MacBook pro, and not long ago, the wonderful GPU which was known to fail, seems to have done so. Now I’m still not a 100% sure.

When I turn the computer on, I hear the optical drive, then the power seems to cut out. Then it normally restarts and plays a delayed boot chime. The computer seems to boot, but I am stuck with a black screen, no output to an external display, no pictures appearing without back light, nothing.

Now I’m certain this is the discreet GPU, but I would still like to use this computer.

Other GPU fails seems to still output a display but this one doesn’t, does this mean the integrated Intel 3000 GPU failed as well? How can I fix this?

I have attached a photo of the back light on (probably means its on lock screen) but no display.

When you boot up your system it goes through POST, then the external drivers are loaded, during that process the Discreet GPU can come up in a failed stated so your system isn’t able to show an image either internally or externally. To over come this we need to disable the Discreet GPU so the the intergraded graphics engine within the CPU is only used. It won’t get there on its own.

The easies way is to restart the system in Safe mode so the drivers don’t load. You may need to reset your SMC as it can get locked. Then install this app gfxCardStatus it will allow you to disable the Discreet GPU.

If you have a second system you can also use target disk mode between the two and then delete the Discreet GPU driver. That last way is to alter the systems firmware DOS-DUDE - Disable MacBook Pro Dedicated GPU

If you really need the better GPU you’ll want to look at replacing your systems logic board with a much better one! The issue you are facing is only a problem with the AMD GPU Apple used. In the 2012 models Apple jumped to the NVIDEA GPU which does not fail from overheating like the AMD as its a newer design that can handle heavy work flows without overheating!

I’ve swapped out over a dozen 2011 models to 2012 logic boards. There is a small modification needed to the LVDS cable otherwise is a direct drop in!

ok, I will try multiple times, for target disk mode, dont I need a Thunderbolt cable?

Are you able to get into Target Disk Mode? Press the T key when restarting your system. You should see the FireWire and Thunderbolt Icon on your screen.

If you are able to get the system into TDM and you have a second system which you can connect then you can access your bum system as its like a external drive. Here's more Understanding the Applications for Target Disk Mode

See thats the issue, I have nothing on the screen, just black. If the screen is supposed to work in safe mode, it isn't. I have reset the SMC numerous times doing the left shift option control and power keys. the booting it into safe mode holding shift.... Weird eh?
