Graphic chip GeForce 320M instead GeForce 9600GT

Hi guys,

I hope that you and your families are all fine in this crazy time.

I’m trying to fix my wife’s Macbook Pro 5.1 Unibody A1268 - Mid 2009. Graphic chip is not working and I’m trying to find a way before purchasing new one (Whole motherboard or new Macbook) since it’s not fixable.

Is it’s possible to fix it it’s short term solution? Some hot air or something but I don’t want to do that.

My question is:

Is it possible to swap graphic chip from Unibody A1342 - Mid 2010, to desolder the GeForce 320M chip and to install into bit older and obviously different A1268 model.

I don’t think that this is possible due to different motherboard shape, VRAM capacity, etc.

But in weird time people may ask wierd questions. Thank you in advance.

Take you all care, God Bless!

Sincerely,

Dragan Dimitrijevic

Hi Dan,

You helped me to decide whether to continue playing around with 3 different but broken Macbook's with a small possibility to learn something so valuable that it's worth of tearing apart of all 3 machines at the end with constant headache since I'm not skilfull enough nor I have previous chip ironing replacement knowledge.

Or better idea to wait a little bit so we can purchase newer model without issues so when the time comes, I'll reach out for help how to fix this or that.

So thank you one more time.

Take you all care.

Cheers.

Dragan (Almost Dragon) ;)

Solução escolhida

The Nvidia chips Apple was using at the time had a few different issues. This model used two chips from Nvidia which makes up the graphics services as well as the Platform Controller Hub (PCH). Both of these chips have had their issues and you would need to replace both of them.

The rub here is the chips are just not being made anymore or even stocked by anyone. Your only hope would be salvaged chips and the probability of getting a good set is quite remote and you do need to proper tools to de-solder as well as solder them on.

Your only option is finding a used logic board, given the history of this series I really don’t recommend pouring to much into them. Frankly, I would take the drive out and get a newer system and then transfer her stuff over using a SATA to USB adapter cable.

Dan, on this model ( 200915" A1286) I think there was a problem with cap C7771 (on the 15" 2010 it was C9560). The failure of theses caps affect the graphic, voltage sent to the GPU is lower than normal). Cap replacement solve the problem. It's well documented on the web.

@lemerise - I remember the 2010 cap, but I don't think the 2008/2009 models had the same issue. But its worth a look!

Remember this series don't have the dual GPU's like the 2010 and newer models and had the flip chip problem.
