iMac 27" 5K LCD Issue After Changing Power Supply

Hello,

I had been experiencing issues with my Late 2015 iMac 5K Retina EMC 2834 where the machine would suddenly just shut off intermittently and would require the AC adapter plug to be removed from the power source and plugged back in before it would be able to restart. After searching iFixit, I had become aware that I probably had a faulty power supply board and that it should be replaced. I ordered the replacement board along with tools and the LCD adhesive kit.

The other day I went through the process of replacing the power supply and after finishing and putting everything back together, I turned on the machine to find that the LCD display is all messed up. There are horizontal lines in some places, vertical streaks in others, image ghosting and completely black on one side. I’ve attached a picture of what it looks like:

Even though I was careful during the repair, I did have a moment where I accidentally lifted the display a little too far with it still connected to the board when I was putting everything back together. It wasn’t much but maybe enough to break something, perhaps the cable or the connector on the board? I have connected and external display and it worked perfectly. Just to clarify, the iMac display itself worked perfectly before I removed it and put it back so it wasn’t something that was faulty, but something that I did during the power supply replacement.

I’m just trying to get an idea of the most logical reason I would be getting this issue and what the first courses of action should be? I don’t want to simply purchase and replace the entire LCD unit unless it actually needs to be replaced which I don’t know. If it’s likely a cable or connector, I would like to start there first to save any unwanted expenses.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Sadly, you’ll need a new one ;-{

What is your exact model as there are two different displays for this series.

Thanks, the display I have is an LM270QQ1 (SD)(B1).

I don't mind having to replace it if that's the issue but I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something such as the connector on the board or the display cable itself before shelling out to replace the LCD and find out that it was not the issue and having to buy a board next. At that point, I'd rather buy another iMac.

As I mentioned in my post, this happened during my removal and reinstallation of the LCD which went pretty smoothly. The only issue that I could put my finger on was some trouble with the display cable removal. It has that hinged bar that goes over it and I may have pulled on it while it was still locked. However there doesn't seem to be any damage to it from its appearance.

I'm not sure how the LCD itself would have become damaged. I'm sure they are delicate items but I didn't do anything like twist or bend it, just cut the adhesive and gently lifted it away from the body.

Sadly you damaged either the tabs or drivers which is where the glass is mated to a flex ribbon within the display assembly Sony T-CON training manual Review figure 4-6

To help isolate the issue, hook it up to an external monitor. If the external is showing the same, then you have a GPU issue.
