Is it possible to recover data from MacBook Pro 2018 with a T2 chip

I have a 2018 macbook pro which has been damaged by water. Luckily the T2 chip and ssd are intact. I know the data recovery port has been removed from the motherboard by apple. It is possible to recover the data? Can I do it on my own or I have to send it to a professional. Thank you.

Yes it is possible though it requires that the T2 chip is able to power on and you are able to put the machine in DFU mode. However because Apple is Apple you need access to GSX and AST2 to be able to start the diagnostics suite which puts the T2 in a target disk mode. I am not aware that anyone has made any 3rd party solutions for this. So I think your best option is to work on it until you can confirm that it shows up in dfu and then bring it in to a aasp so they can run the tools to transfer the data.

These support pages has more info about T2 dfu with use of apple configurator 2

Not unless you can get the previous owner to remove it from their iCloud account.

I believe it would be possible. I also have a MacBook Pro 2018 but it stuck at a black screen. I was so worried about my computer files. I looked through many pages and most of them indicated that the T2 chip makes it almost impossible to recover data from a damaged Mac.

I was so desperate until I saw this page. It recommended a data recovery tool called iBoysoft Data Recovery. This was my last hope. So I went ahead bought the software and tried it, too panically to test demos. Results maybe 60% of the files. While iBoysoft Data Recovery did get some of my files all the databases were destroyed and none of my layered .afphoto files were recovered so lost a lot of man-hours. I’m on the road at present so my backup procedures were not as strict as they should of been so yes everything is my fault.

I hope it will help!

May I know how could you operate your Mac with iBoysoft when the Mac was stuck at a black screen?

Hello, maybe you can just try a third-party data recovery tool, I think it’s the fastest way to recover your files. You can use Bitwar Data Recovery, it offers a 30-day free trial without space limitation. Hope it still helps!

This software is sus, reading the reviews it seems like none of the people actually speak English; sounds like bad Google translate from another language. I'd be wary.

Hey,

I have the same problem. I have 2019 MacBook Pro 16 inch 512 gb (I think it has T2 chip), and it has been damaged by water unfortunately.

I took it to apple and they said they have to change the motherboard totally as CPU is broke (short circuit). but if they do change the motherboard , I will loose all of my data and files. can anyone help me if I can have my datas from my MacBook. ?

ps : My MacBook is not working at all.

Your help is highly appreciated.
