MacBook Pro Turns on but Display Glitches, Very weird Never Seen?

Hi, So I was troubleshooting this Laptop and it turns on and I hear chime but no image on screen.

I tried plugging it into an external monitor through HDMI and it worked but only if lid is closed or else it shows as a grey screen which is very odd.

The screen is also not broken because sometimes when open screen it will display and glitch. I have never seen this before and have no idea what to Google to figure this out?

Is there a name for this issue or does anyone know what is going on and how to fix?

Here is a video I made showing this issue:

I hope someone is able to help me out, Thank you in Advance!

I think you have a logic board issue with the display logic. Did the system get liquid damaged?

is there a way to check or what would I google for this type of problem and I don't think it was water damage but you never know as this was given to me to try and figure out and I asked him if it was water damage and he said no.

It's just odd how the computer works great when closed and gets all glitchy when I open it up I'm thinking its motherboard but don't know what to Google to check.

Any ideas or tutorials you can reference by any chance?

The logic board has a very complex video layout. Besides feeding the internal iDP (also known as eDP), the feed also feeds into the HDMI port as well as the two Thunderbolt ports! This is the logic area you need to focus on. Review the Schematics for the system to check the components in the circuit. A common issue is the Intel DSL5520 Thunderbolt 2 Controller chip just behind the ports.

Thank you, I will try my best to figure this out.

There’s not much one can do to help at a distance, that seems to be a logic board issue that needs to be troubleshooted at component level. If you have a known good working screen you may try replacing that to see if it can help isolate the problem further. Good thing is it doesn’t seem to be graphic card related.

okay is there a tutorial I can look at to figure out how to troubleshoot my logic board as I don't know what to google for this issue as its very odd and random issues that are occurring as shown in the video.

@unicronman Not really, logic board troubleshooting is not something one can learn with a tutorial, it takes years to go through all that's needed for that. You can take some introductory courses to learn basic troubleshooting..I believe Rewa in China and Rossman in New York City are holding them regularly. You can easily find both of them with Google. You can find some of their troubleshooting videos on youtube, especially Rossman's. maybe they can help with your issue.

Okay Thank you I might as well try to wish me luck.
