Horizontal lines across screen and no touch after phone repair

I have been having issues with my charging port, so while I had my phone apart I replaced the battery as well (why not, it’s almost 2 years old already, right?) no issues on teardown or even assembling—everything seemed to go together well. Before applying the front screen adhesive, I wanted to test to make sure everything works and both the charging port and battery seem ready to go but the screen is now the issue.

As the screen turns on, what is supposed to be black shows as green down the right edge of the screen with horizontal lines stemming across the entirety of the screen. Once fully on, the right side is entirely white (though tints correctly along with night shift) again, fading into green just inside the edge, then to normal with lines across the screen.

I do not see any bent or broken pins on either of the connectors and there is no visible damage to the back side of the display. I did notice the same issue on the ifixit Teardown in Reverse once the phone was reassembled, but cannot find anywhere on the site or others if this is a repairable issue.

Other things of note:

  • The touch screen worked on first startup, but no longer worked after rebooting the phone
  • I followed the disassembly instructions to break the adhesive down the right side of the screen first
  • I have had no screen issues prior to the teardown

From what I can tell, the screen itself is fine, but the pins on the connectors are what ended up being the problem. Got a new screen and everything works perfectly. The pins on the cables seem overly delicate, so keep that in mind when re-assembling.

So, in short, if you run into a screen issue when putting your Pixel 2 XL back together, you will likely need a new screen unless you know how to find bent/broken pins and repair them.
