The CPU is is socketed and is technically possible, but it's also attached in a fasion that makes it nearly impossible to remove it without damaging the socket or the rest of the logic baord. I'm certain that others will try and tell you that they can replace it, but i don't recommend it myself.

If you want to get a different CPU, the safest way is to purchase the logic board that comes with the other CPU that you had in mind.

Would you please expand on this? What's this "attached in a fasion that makes it nearly impossible to remove". Do you have any links on this?

have you ever attempted to remove a CPU from an apple. It's not cut and dry as with a PC. Last time I checked, even with the heatsink removed from an iMac, the CPU is attached with an adhesive, and removing it damaged the socket or the CPU.

Yes, I've removed CPUs from a whole lot of Apple products in the last thirty-two years and never come across an adhesive holding it on.

OK, so I don't know what was wrong with the ones that I was taking appart then as when I went to remove the CPU, either the CPU or the socket were damaged. It's not that i was doing anything wrong, i've been building systems for as long as i can remember on PC, Apples, ranging from desktops to laptops to server and with so many different socket styles that i care to mention and the only times i've had issues were when i was attempting to replace the CPU in an iMac directly or when i was fixing a system for a friend who had failed to tell me that his CPU was overheating to the point where the socket had melted.

iFixit could remove the CPU from the logic board without damaging it.Therefore I think the CPU is not adhered

to the socket.

Adhesive on processors head??? Man, you must be joking...

Update

Socket melted in a mac? Hilarious! Never heard in my 38years of live!
