Dryer suddenly very noisy and vibrating/rumbling

My 8-month-old Maytag dryer model # MGD5500FW0 suddenly became much noisier than usual and was vibrating perceptibly. It’s somewhat rumbly and raspy sounding. It suddenly stopped about 10 days (probably a dozen cycles) later.

I took a video while it was doing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmFfmjOA...

I had scheduled service for it, since it’s under warranty, and of course the problem went away the day before the tech was supposed to come. The tech didn’t show up for the scheduled appointment anyway (sigh). They haven’t contacted me at all, and I’m trying to decide if I should reschedule. If there’s something that should be fixed, I definitely want to do it under the remaining few months of my warranty, but I’m not sure what they would do if they come when it’s not manifesting the problem. Given that it takes almost two weeks to get an appointment, and it seems to fix itself after a while, I’m not sure how much luck I’ll have getting a tech here at the same time it’s doing it, should it happen again.

I’m pretty handy and don’t mind taking it apart, but I have no idea what I might look for since there’s nothing happening right now. Or maybe I shouldn’t even worry, but in my experience there aren’t many mechanical problems that just appear once and go away forever.

So - is anyone able to identify what might have been wrong from the video, and why it might have “fixed itself”?

My Maytag Dryer was making a rattling noise when the dryer was running. It happened even when there was no clothing in the dryer. I opened it up and determined that the noise was coming from the drum. I found coins in the dryer drum fins that were rattling around. I removed the fin and removed the coins and the dryer no does not rattle. I didn't find this problem listed anywhere in any support site so I post it here to help someone else.

is there a way to manually add tension to the belt? it doesnt appear worn but its not tight either and there appears to be room to tighten it.

On this new a machine, the first thing to look at is the Drive belt, it could be slipping on and off or if to loose inverting then going back into place. Feel it for wear and visually inspect it for marring.

Cause 1

Drive Belt

The drive belt is a very long, slender belt that wraps all the way around the dryer drum, around a tension pulley, and then around the drive motor. Over time, the drive belt can become frayed or otherwise damaged. If the drive belt is frayed or damaged, the dryer will be noisy as it turns. Inspect the drive belt for signs of wear. If the drive belt is worn, replace it.

Cause 2

Drum Roller

One or more of the drum rollers might be worn out. Many dryers have two drum support rollers on the rear of the drum, and some dryers have two more rollers supporting the front of the drum. When the drum rollers are worn out, they can cause the dryer to make a loud rumbling noise. To determine if the rollers are worn out, inspect the rollers. If one or more of the rollers are severely worn, we recommend replacing all of the rollers at the same time as a preventative measure. (The roller shaft can often be reused if it is in good condition. Clean the shaft thoroughly before installing the new rollers.)

Cause 3

Drum Roller Axle

One or more of the drum roller axles might be worn out. Most dryers have two drum support rollers on the rear of the drum, and some dryers have two more rollers supporting the front of the drum. Over time, the drum rollers and axles wear out, causing the dryer to make a loud rumbling noise. To determine if the drum roller axles are worn out, remove the belt from the dryer and try turning the drum by hand. If the drum does not rotate freely, check the support rollers for wear. If the rollers spin freely without wobbling, the axles do not need to be replaced. If a roller wobbles and/or does not spin freely, we recommend replacing all of the axles and rollers as a preventative measure.

2 years later I finally got around to fixing this. Itwent from "intermittent" to "really bad and constant" about a month ago. I took the machine apart to look for anything obviously misaligned or loose, but all was well, so I replaced the rollers. Problem solved, so #2 was correct!

My thoughts:

1) What a pain to take this thing apart. Had to completely remove front and back (30+ screws, unhook gas, water, vent) and still access to some of the rollers was tricky without further dismantling. Took nearly 2 hours start to finish.

2) Sad this problem happened on a very new dryer. I've had several old Kenmore dryers over the years -and never had a roller problem. And they can be taken apart and drum removed in five minutes, pretty much any problem (belt and tensioner typically) can be solved for less than 25 bucks in 15 or 20 minutes. Progress... not always good. Disappointed that I've had more trouble with this $700 new dryer than any old $25 Craig's List dryer I've owned over the years.

I will hazard the guess that some pocket change or some other such small object was in the clothes loaded at some point and it got into the felt gasket at the back of the drum to make your “rasping” noise effect. It may have then worked its way thru some how and dropped into the inside of the machine. Only way to know for sure is to disassemble and find said object in bottom of machine somewhere or possibly subject yourself to a greater mystery if you don’t find any such object inside somewhere.

I like this... makes a lot of sense to me and explains why it might just go away. I'm going to pull the top off this weekend and see if there's anything obvious.

This makes total sense! I was getting the same noise from my 3 year old dryer. I took it apart expecting to find worn out rollers, but they were fine. I put it back together and it’s been running as quiet as the day I bought it. I didn’t look for any spare change before I vacuumed the lint inside the dryer, but it must have been the issue.

Could just literally be those %#*@ Gremlins, in there causing havoc as Gremlins will do!!!

My 2 year old Hotpoint dryer is making rumbling noise. I made sure it is level, but noticed when I tilt the machine forwat ( on it's 2 front legs) the rumbling almost goes away!!! I haven't opened up the machine yet to inspect inside!
