alt/option boot not working!

OK - So I did BootCamp and put Windows 10 on a USB drive, installed Windows 10 over the entire drive so I don't have OS-X anymore on it (I do have another laptop though if I need it later). So at this point this computer only has Windows 10 on it.

But when I was trying to install Windows 10, I couldn't get the computer to alt/option boot, but it would still boot to the USB, that I installed Windows 10 from. Now I’m trying to take Windows 10 back off of it, but I can’t get into alt/option boot, And do not tell me to go to a Apple Store, there isn’t one near where I live, so I’m not gonna drive hours to get to one.

I was going to recommend you test going to the boot menu with another Hard Drive or SSD installed internally but this model has an expensive and proprietary SSD. Phooey! :-/

Something is missing here..bootcamp is a dual partition boot system..how did you get rid of the Mac Os partition ? If I understood right, whatever you used to cancel the Mac Os partition has likely wiped any Mac Os trace from the Ssd drive, hence the Option command cannot work. However, if there’s no trace of Mac Os left you’ll need a bootable thumb drive with a Mac Os install. You can try pressing command+R upon start up, but that might not work either.

Command + R should work as that is internet recovery and downloads the internet installer for MacOS.

It's most likely that the MacOS partition was deleted during the installation of Windows 10 before installing it by the OP, I've done this a few times when I prefer to have windows only on my MacBook Pro.

Correct! You can make a MacBook Pro a 'Plain Jane' Windows only system once you have the drivers setup with BootCamp.

So at this point the drive no longer has either the recovery or Apple GUID partitions (HFS+ or APFS) depending on the MacOS release.

You should still have access the Internet Recovery option in any case.

@danj @benjamen50 That's my doubt about the internet recovery, not sure if it's a firmware or an Os feature..does it survive a full wipe ? I've never had a Windows only Mac so far..just out of curiosity..

@arbaman & @benjamen50 - If you put in a virgin drive into this system you would still have Internet Recovery as this is a service within the EFI.

Here its possible the hidden recovery partition is still present, but assuming it was lost when he wiped the drive to install Windows then it would be gone. Which is why I just went with the idea the drive needed to be redone completely as it would be more likely to work than trying to hobble it back together.

As you have a second system You should still have the EFI (BIOS) commands available in this case the easiest way is to connect your Windows Mac system to your MacOS Mac system via Target Disk Mode and then using a cable between them reformat the drive afresh with the proper GUID partition and do a fresh OS install from your good Mac. You could also launch internet recovery directly but if your internet connect is not very good I would pass on that.

So to do this just restart your Windows Mac pressing on the T key making it look like an external drive to your other MacOS Mac once you’ve connected the Thunderbolt cable between them. Then just run the Disk Utility to delete the partitions on your Windows Mac’s drive and then run the MacOS installer. If you don’t have it on your MacOS system just go back to the Apps Stop and click on the purchase tab to find it somewhere in the listing. (I do wish Apple would make it sortable someday). Download it and you’re good to go!

OK you don’t have a means to connect the two systems as your other system only has FireWire. Then you’ll need to create a USB OS installer drive following this guide: How to create a bootable macOS High Sierra installer drive if you have a different version of MacOS you’ll find a link to the others within this guide.

That gives you three different ways to recover your MacOS onto your system. But before you start any of these do make sure you’ve backed up anything important first!
